01
What Is Monthly Car Insurance?
Monthly car insurance is the longest single temporary car policy available here: up to 28 days of comprehensive cover, starting when you choose and ending automatically.
It is not a subscription. It does not renew, and it does not bill you each month. It is one policy, bought once, for a period of up to 28 days. That makes it the top end of temporary car insurance, and the longer version of weekly car insurance, which covers one to four weeks.
The policy has its own certificate and policy number, and it sits alongside whatever annual insurance the car already carries. A claim on it does not touch the owner’s no claims discount.
02
How Do You Get Monthly Car Insurance?
Enter the registration, say who is driving and when cover should start, choose up to 28 days, then check the end date before you pay.
- 1
Enter the registration
The number plate is enough to start. It pulls up the make, model and value of the car, which is most of what the quote is priced on.
- 2
Say who is driving and when
Your licence details, your address and the start date and time. Cover can start within minutes of paying, or you can set it for a future date.
- 3
Choose the length
Up to 28 days. Count the days to the date you expect to need the car until, and allow a margin, because nothing can be added once the policy is running.
- 4
Check it, then buy
Read the end date, what is covered, what the excess is and what the optional extras add. The certificate is emailed once the policy is issued, and that certificate is the proof of cover, not the quote. Cover exists only once the policy is issued and the certificate is in hand.
03
When Is Monthly Cover the Right Length?
Monthly cover suits a situation that lasts several weeks and has a definite end, such as a bridge to an annual policy, a long visit or a long loan.
Bridging to an annual policy
You have bought a car and the annual policy cannot start yet, or you are changing insurer and want a clean start date. Twenty-eight days is long enough to arrange a permanent policy without pressure. If you are driving the car home first, drive away insurance covers that journey.
A long visit
A relative who lives in the UK and is staying for most of a month can use a borrowed car on a monthly policy if they meet the licence rules. If their licence was issued outside the UK, see non-UK licence insurance for what is and is not accepted.
A long loan
A friend is abroad for a month and has lent you a car, or your own car is in for a long repair. Cover for the borrowed car sits on its own policy, so the owner’s annual insurance is not involved.
Business Use
A month of meetings and site visits in a borrowed car is covered by business class 1, which is included. Deliveries, taxi work and carrying goods are not. See business car insurance for the limits.
Ready when you are

Just the registration to begin. Fully comprehensive, one hour to 28 days.
04
What Does Monthly Car Insurance Cover?
It normally covers damage you cause to other people and their property, damage to the car you are driving, fire and theft, with business class 1 use included.
Third party liability
The cover every UK motor policy must carry: injury to other people and damage to their vehicles or property.
Damage to the car you are driving
Accidental and malicious damage to the car itself, subject to the compulsory excess shown on the schedule. Excess protection, legal cover and breakdown cover are available as optional extras.
Fire and theft
Fire damage however it starts, theft of the vehicle, and damage caused during an attempted theft.
Driving in the EU
Whether the policy covers driving in the EU, and on what terms, depends on the insurer. A month is long enough for a continental trip, so check the policy wording before you plan one. The detail is set by the broker and the insurer that takes the risk, and it is in the policy wording and the insurance product information document rather than here. Read both before you buy.
05
How Much Does Monthly Car Insurance Cost?
From £81.41 for 28 days. Your own quote depends on the driver, the car and the start date.
What moves the price is the same as on any motor policy, and the four things that matter most are below.
Policies never auto-renew, and there is no refund once cover has started.
What sets your price
- 1 The car Value, insurance group and whether insurers see many claims on the model.
- 2 The driver Age, how long the licence has been held, claims and convictions.
- 3 The start date and time The price is set for when cover begins, so moving the start moves the quote.
- 4 The length The number of days sets the price.
Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.
06
Who Can Get Monthly Car Insurance?
Drivers aged 17 to 75 with a full UK licence. The minimum age and the licence types accepted vary by insurer.
You also need a permanent UK address, and you must never have had insurance refused, cancelled or voided. Points and convictions are declared on the form within each insurer’s limits: see temporary car insurance for convicted drivers.
The car must be worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, have a valid MOT and not be SORN, apart from driving to a pre-booked MOT. It cannot be a hire or rental vehicle, imported, left-hand drive or modified, and it must weigh no more than 3.5 tonnes with no more than seven seats. Check the MOT expiry date against the end date of the policy before you buy.
07
Why Is Temporary Cover Not a Substitute for Annual Insurance?
Because a car you keep on the road must be insured continuously, and a 28-day policy always ends.
GOV.UK sets out the rules on vehicle insurance. A registered keeper must have the vehicle insured at all times unless it has been declared off the road. That is called continuous insurance enforcement, and it applies even when the car is parked on a drive and not being driven. A gap in cover can lead to a fixed penalty, and the DVLA can pursue the keeper, whether or not the car moved.
If a car is genuinely off the road, declaring it SORN removes the requirement to insure it, but it also means the car cannot be driven on a public road. The standard criteria for temporary cover say the car cannot be SORN when cover starts, except when driving to a pre-booked MOT.
In practice:
- If the car is yours and you are keeping it, arrange annual insurance, and use temporary cover only for the bridge.
- If the car belongs to someone else, a temporary policy in your name is what the product is for.
- If you are not sure a particular use is allowed, read the policy wording, because the policy wording decides.
What Happens When the 28 Days End?
The policy ends at the date and time on the certificate, and driving after it means driving without insurance, which is an offence.
Nothing renews. If you still need cover after 28 days, you must buy a second policy before the first ends. A second policy is a new quote, with the same eligibility rules and no guarantee of acceptance, so do not leave it to the last day. Check the new certificate begins when the old one ends, with no gap.
If the car is stopped and the police check the Motor Insurance Database, they will see the policy if it was in force. Policies are submitted to the database four times a day, so keep the certificate on your phone.
Repeated back-to-back policies are a sign that an annual policy may be the better option. How back-to-back purchases are treated is set out in the quote, so check it there.
08
Monthly Cover Compared With a Week
Weekly and monthly cover are the same policy at different lengths. The table sets the two side by side.
The two columns are not like for like, because the weekly figures state a basis period and the £81.41 does not. The products are the same policy at different lengths, so the cover is identical. Weekly car insurance covers one to four weeks. For a car you keep, temporary cover is for the gap before an annual policy, as the section above explains.
| Weekly | Monthly | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 to 4 weeks | Up to 28 days |
| Published starting price | £46.59 for 1 week, £54.11 for 2, £64.25 for 3 | £81.41 for 28 days |
| Typical use | A gap between policies, a car on loan, a visitor | The longest bridge, a long visit, a long loan |
| Basis of the price | Lowest sold, December 2025 to May 2026 | No basis period published |
Before you start
Can you get it?
If you and the car fit these criteria, a quote is likely.
The driver
- Aged 17 to 75, minimum age depending on the insurer
- A full UK licence from the DVLA or DVA, or an EU or EEA licence with at least 12 months of UK residence
- A permanent UK address
- Never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided
- Points and convictions declared on the form and priced within each insurer's limits
The car
- Worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band
- A valid MOT, and not declared SORN, unless you are driving to a pre-booked MOT
- Up to 3.5 tonnes and no more than seven seats
- Not a hire or rental vehicle, and not held by the police
- Not imported, left-hand drive or modified, apart from factory options or mobility adaptations
Criteria are set by each insurer on the broker’s panel and vary between them. Acceptance is always the insurer’s decision.
Questions
Monthly Car Insurance: FAQs
What is the longest temporary car insurance I can buy?
Twenty-eight days. That is the longest single policy offered here, so there is no 60-day or three-month temporary car policy. If you need longer, the choices are a second temporary policy or an annual one.
How much does monthly car insurance cost?
From £81.41 for 28 days on the broker’s published prices. Your own quote depends on the driver, the car and the start date, so treat that as a starting point rather than a typical price.
Can I use monthly cover instead of an annual policy?
Not as a substitute for annual insurance on a car you keep. A car you keep on the road must be insured continuously, or declared SORN if it is off the road. Temporary cover is designed for a bridge or a short loan, and it ends after 28 days at most.
What is the continuous insurance requirement?
A registered keeper must insure a vehicle at all times, or make a SORN declaration if it is off the road, even if the car is parked and not being driven. GOV.UK sets out the rules and the penalties for letting cover lapse.
Can I take a second policy when the first ends?
A second policy is a new purchase, with a new quote and the same eligibility rules, so acceptance is not guaranteed. Arrange it before the first ends, and check the certificate shows no gap in cover.
Does monthly cover renew by itself?
No. Policies never auto-renew, and there is no refund once cover has started. The policy ends at the date and time on the certificate whether or not the car is back.
Is monthly car insurance fully comprehensive?
Yes. The policy is comprehensive as standard, so damage to the car you are driving is included alongside damage you cause to other people and their property. Check the policy wording and the compulsory excess before you buy.
Will the owner’s no claims discount be affected?
No. A monthly policy is standalone, with its own policy number, so a claim on it is handled under that policy rather than the owner’s annual insurance. Their no claims discount and renewal are untouched.
Does it cost anything to get a quote?
No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
