01

What Is Temporary Van Insurance?

Temporary van insurance is a comprehensive policy for a van up to 3.5 tonnes that runs for a fixed period, from one hour to 28 days, instead of a year, on its own certificate.

It is the van version of temporary car insurance: a standalone policy bought for the hours or days you need it, with business class 1 use included as standard and carriage of your own goods available as an option. The van can be up to 3.5 tonnes and worth up to £65,000 with some insurers, which takes in most ordinary panel vans, Lutons, pickups and crew vans that people borrow for a job or a move.

Because the policy is separate from the owner’s annual insurance, a claim on it does not touch their no claims discount. That is the reason owners are comfortable lending a van and borrowers are comfortable asking, and it is written into the policy rather than being a favour.

02

How Do You Get Temporary Van Insurance?

Enter the registration, say who is driving and when, choose the length and the use, then check the quote and the policy wording before you pay.

  1. 1

    Enter the registration

The number plate pulls up the make, model, weight and value, which is most of what the quote is priced on. The van must have a valid MOT, must not be SORN, seized or a hire vehicle, and must not be a converted campervan.

  2. 2

Say who is driving and when

Your licence details, your address and the start time. Cover can start within minutes of paying, or you can set it for the hour you collect the van.

  3. 3

Choose the length and the use

Anything from one hour to 28 days. Business class 1 use, such as driving to sites and meetings, is included. Add carriage of your own goods if you are moving your own things or carrying your own tools. If you will carry other people’s goods for payment, that is hire and reward and a different product.

  4. 4

    Check it, then buy

Read what is covered, what is excluded and what the optional extras add. The certificate lands in your inbox the moment you pay, and that certificate, not the quote, is the proof of cover.

03

Which Lengths Are Available?

Four lengths cover the ways people actually use a van: an hour or two for a single run, a day for a move or a job, a week for a project, and up to 28 days for a longer stretch.

The starting prices are the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026, and they are floors, not typical prices. A policy cannot be extended, only bought again.

04

When Is Temporary Van Cover the Right Choice?

It suits any job where you will use a van you do not insure all year: a house move, a borrowed van, a day or two of work, or the gap before your own annual policy starts.

Moving house

The commonest reason. You borrow a friend’s van, or take one from a relative, and need it for a day or a weekend. Their policy almost never covers you as a driver, and being added to it for one day is slow and risks their discount. A one-day policy with carriage of own goods costs little and leaves their policy alone.

A borrowed or privately hired van

A rental company includes insurance in the hire price, and hire vans are excluded from this product, so ask the rental desk what their cover includes. For a van lent by a friend or hired from a private owner, temporary cover fills the gap, and the quote confirms whether the van qualifies as soon as the registration is entered.

A day’s work

A tradesperson whose own van is in the garage, a small business with an extra pair of hands for a week, or someone collecting stock from a supplier. Business class 1 is included, so site visits and client calls are covered. If the work is carrying goods for other people, read the next section before you choose the use.

Between vehicles

Replacing your own van and the new one is not yet on an annual policy, or driving a van home from the dealer. A few days of temporary cover bridges the gap. For cars the same idea is covered by drive away insurance.

05

Carrying Your Own Goods or Hire and Reward: Which Do You Need?

Choose carriage of your own goods if you are moving your own things, and hire and reward if you will carry someone else’s goods for payment. The first is an option with some insurers on this policy; the second is a different product.

The practical difference is whose goods are in the back and whether money changes hands for carrying them. Business class 1, included as standard, covers driving in connection with your work: sites, meetings, suppliers. It does not cover carrying goods as the purpose of the journey, which is why the own goods option exists.

Choosing the wrong use is the mistake that causes trouble at claim time. A policy that did not include the use you were carrying out may not respond, so pick the use honestly even if it adds to the price.

06

What Does Temporary Van Insurance Cover, and What Does It Not?

It covers the van and your liability to other people, comprehensively, but it does not cover tools, cargo or goods in transit, and it does not cover wear and tear or breakdown.

What is covered

Third party liability for injury and damage to others, which every UK motor policy must carry. Accidental and malicious damage to the van itself, fire and theft, subject to the excess shown on the schedule. Business class 1 use as standard, and carriage of your own goods as an option.

What is not covered

Tools, cargo and goods in transit are outside the policy. If you lose a customer’s furniture, or a thief takes your toolkit from the back, the van policy pays for the van, not the contents. Wear and tear and mechanical breakdown are outside it too. A separate tools policy or goods in transit policy does the contents job, and it is worth arranging before a paid job, not after.

Optional extras

Excess protection and legal cover can be added, priced in the quote. The detail is set by the broker and the insurer that takes the risk, and it is in the policy wording and the insurance product information document rather than here, so read both before you pay.

07

How Much Does Temporary Van Insurance Cost?

The published starting prices here were £21.44 for one hour, £15.36 for one day, £51.82 for one week and £62.64 for two weeks, based on the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026.

Those are floors, not typical prices, and your own quote is set by the van, the driver and the use. The day below the hour is the figure to remember: a van job is rarely as short as it looks, and a day costs less than the hour it might overrun.

What sets your price

  • 1 The van Value, weight and the type of body.
  • 2 The driver Age, how long the licence has been held, claims and convictions.
  • 3 The use Carriage of your own goods adds to the price; hire and reward is a separate product.
  • 4 The length The number of hours or days sets the price.

Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

08

Who Can Get Temporary Van Insurance?

Drivers aged 19 to 74 with a full UK licence, driving a van up to 3.5 tonnes with a valid MOT. Age limits, the licence types accepted and the value band vary by insurer.

The driver

Aged 19 to 74, with the limits varying by insurer, a full licence rather than a provisional one, and a permanent UK address. Points and motoring convictions are declared on the form within each insurer’s limits. The criteria for this product also ask that you have never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided, and that you have no unspent criminal conviction or prosecution pending.

The van

Up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, which a category B car licence covers; GOV.UK sets out the categories and anything heavier needs C1. Worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, with a valid MOT, not SORN, not seized by the police, not a hire vehicle, and not a converted campervan, which needs temporary motorhome insurance.

Who cannot

Drivers under 19, provisional licence holders, who need temporary learner driver insurance on a car, anyone driving a hired van, and anyone carrying goods for payment, who needs temporary courier insurance.

09

What Happens If You Drive a Van Without the Right Cover?

Driving without insurance is a fixed penalty of £300 and six points, or an unlimited fine and disqualification at court, and the van can be seized. Driving on the wrong class of use leaves a claim unpaid, which is the same loss by a slower route.

GOV.UK sets out the penalties: a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points, or at court an unlimited fine and possible disqualification, and the police have the power to seize, and in some cases destroy, the vehicle. The owner’s comprehensive policy does not cover a borrower unless the borrower is named on it, and a car policy’s driving other cars extension does not stretch to a van.

The police and insurers check the Motor Insurance Database, which is updated four times a day, so a new policy can take a few hours to appear. Keep the emailed certificate on your phone in case the database has not caught up when you are stopped. If the van is for a longer commercial arrangement, business car insurance explains what business use on a quote does and does not include, and one day car insurance covers the case where a car would do the job instead.

Questions

Temporary Van Insurance: FAQs

How long can I insure a van for?

From one hour up to 28 days on a single policy. A house move fits in a day or a weekend, a week covers a job, and 28 days is the longest one policy runs. Choose the number of hours or days when you get the quote, counting from the time you collect the van to the time you hand it back.

Can you insure a van for 3 months?

Not on one temporary policy, which stops at 28 days. Back-to-back policies are possible, but each is a fresh quote with no guarantee of the same price or acceptance.

Can I get temporary van insurance under 21?

With some insurers. The minimum age for van cover varies by insurer, and the lowest on the panel is 19, so a driver aged 19 or 20 may be quoted and a younger one will not.

Can I get temporary insurance for a hired van?

No. Hire and rental vans are excluded from this product, and a rental company normally includes insurance in the hire price anyway, so ask what that covers. This cover is for a van you borrow, or hire privately from an individual, or own.

Does temporary van insurance cover my tools?

No. The policy covers the van and your liability to other people, but not tools, cargo or goods in transit. Tools and stock need their own insurance, such as a tools policy or a goods in transit policy, and a thief who empties the back of the van is a loss on those policies, not this one.

What is the difference between carrying my own goods and hire and reward?

Carriage of your own goods means moving your own belongings, tools or stock, for example on a house move or to a job. Hire and reward means carrying someone else’s goods for payment. Own goods is an option with some insurers on this policy; hire and reward is a separate product, set out on the courier page, because the risk and the price are different.

How much does temporary van insurance cost?

The published starting prices here were £21.44 for one hour, £15.36 for one day, £51.82 for one week and £62.64 for two weeks, based on the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026. A day was published below an hour, so price the day if the job might run on. Your own quote depends on the driver, the van and the use you choose.

What is the lowest-cost way to insure a van for a day?

There is no single lowest-cost insurer. The length and the use set the price, and both are shown on the quote before you pay. A policy bought too short is two policies when it runs out, and a policy on the wrong use is no policy at all at claim time.

Will a claim affect the van owner’s no claims discount?

No. The policy is standalone, with its own certificate and policy number, so a claim is handled under it rather than the owner’s annual policy. Their no claims discount and renewal are untouched, which is why owners lend on it.

How big a van can I insure?

Vans up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, worth up to £65,000 with each insurer setting its own band, which covers most ordinary panel vans, Lutons and pickups. Anything heavier needs a C1 licence and falls outside this product, and a converted campervan is outside it too.

Can I start the cover straight away?

You choose the start time, and it can be within minutes of paying. Cover exists only once the policy has been issued and the certificate is in your inbox, so do not move the van on the strength of a quote. The Motor Insurance Database is updated four times a day, so keep the certificate on your phone for the first few hours.

Does it cost anything to get a quote?

No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
