01

What Is One Day Learner Driver Insurance?

One day learner driver insurance is a comprehensive policy for a provisional licence holder practising in a car that normally already has its own annual insurance, running for a full 24 hours from the start time you choose.

It is the one-day length of temporary learner driver insurance, the product that runs from one hour to 24 weeks on a single policy. Learner cover comes in four tiers: hourly from one to 24 hours, daily from one to 28 days, weekly from one to four weeks and monthly up to 24 weeks. A single day is the first step up from the hourly tier, and the length that suits practice which will not fit neatly into an hour or two.

It is the learner form of temporary car insurance, bought by the day and not the year, written for a provisional licence rather than a full one. The policy has its own certificate and policy number, and it sits alongside the annual insurance the car already carries, never in place of it. It is built around a qualified supervisor beside you on every drive, and normally the car’s own annual policy underneath.

Because the policy is separate from the owner’s insurance, a claim on it does not touch their no claims discount. That is why a parent or friend who would hesitate to add a learner to their annual policy will often agree to lend the car for a day on a policy of its own.

02

How Do You Get One Day Learner Driver Insurance?

Enter the car’s registration, add your provisional licence and your supervisor’s details, choose one day and a start time, then read the declaration and the policy wording before you pay.

  1. 1

    Enter the registration

Use the registration of the car you will practise in. It normally already has an annual policy in force, and whether the insurer requires one is in its criteria; it must be a car: vans, lorries, minibuses, motorhomes, horseboxes, taxis and tippers are outside this product. The registration brings up the make, model and value, which is most of what the quote is priced on.

  2. 2

Add your details and your supervisor’s

Your provisional licence and address, and the licence details of the person who will sit beside you. The declaration asks for a learner with no penalty points, no claims and no pending prosecutions, so have that confirmed before you start. One learner is covered on each policy.

  3. 3

Choose one day and the start time

Pick one day, then set the start time. Cover can start within minutes of paying, or you can set it for the hour you plan to set off. The 24 hours run from the time you choose, so choose it with the practice in mind and not the moment you happen to be at a screen.

  4. 4

    Read the declaration, then buy

The quote ends with a declaration you confirm: the car, the supervisor and your record. Read it slowly, because the policy only responds when it was true. The certificate lands in your inbox as soon as you pay, and that certificate, not the quote, is the proof of cover. Cover exists only once the policy is issued and the certificate is in hand, so do not start the car before you have it.

03

When Does the Day Start and End?

A one day learner policy runs for 24 hours from the start time you choose, so the end time is the start time on the following day.

The start time is your choice. It can be within minutes of paying, which suits a drive you are about to set off on, or it can be set for later, which suits a Saturday morning you have planned for the week. Set it for the moment you intend to start practising and not the moment you buy, so that none of the 24 hours is spent with the car still on the drive.

The policy stops at the time printed on the certificate. It does not stop when the practice does, and it does not carry on when the practice overruns. The one exception is passing your test: after a pass, the policy gives you a short grace period to drive home, set by the insurer and shown on the policy, and is then void, even if the 24 hours have not finished. The table shows how the choices play out.

What you chooseWhat happens

When Is One Day Learner Cover the Right Choice?

One day cover suits practice that fills a good part of a day or has no clean finish time: a long Saturday session, the day of the driving test, a visit home, or a trial day before buying longer cover.

A long Saturday in a parent’s car

The commonest reason. A parent or relative lends the car for a full day, and you want a long run of practice with a stop for lunch: town driving in the morning, a country road after, and the same junction attempted until it stops being frightening. A day gives the whole session room, with none of the arithmetic of working out whether three separate hours would have been cheaper.

The day of the driving test

A day is built around the test. It can take in a warm-up practice drive, the journey to the test centre, the test itself and the drive home. The test centre decides whether it will accept the car, so check that before relying on it. If you pass, the policy gives you a short grace period to drive home and is then void, so have your own full licence insurance ready before you turn the key again.

A visit home from university

Many learners practise only when they are back at the family home, so a weekend or a reading week is the window. If the visit is a single day, the day length fits; if it runs to several, weekly learner driver insurance covers one to four weeks. The family car keeps its annual policy and its no claims discount, and the learner policy sits beside it for the days you are home.

A trial day in a friend’s car

Some learners want to know how practice with a particular supervisor and car feels before committing to anything longer. A single day is a low-commitment way to find out, and it leaves the friend’s own policy and discount alone. If the day goes well, the longer lengths are there for the next stretch, bought as a fresh policy.

05

What Does One Day Learner Driver Insurance Cover?

It covers the learner while supervised, comprehensively: damage to other people and their property, damage to the car being driven, fire and theft, with the owner’s no claims discount untouched.

What is covered

Third party liability for injury and damage to others, which every UK motor policy must carry, plus damage to the car itself, fire and theft, subject to the excess. Cover applies to the learner while a qualified supervisor is in the passenger seat. The supervisor is covered only to complete a journey in an emergency, if the learner cannot continue, or to drive home after the learner passes the test. For any other drive, the supervisor needs their own cover on that car.

The excess

Learner policies carry a higher excess than ordinary cover, because learners have more small bumps. One insurer’s declaration sets a minimum of £250 for damage, fire and theft, with a further £500 where the claim is a single-vehicle fault incident or the other party cannot be traced. Read the figure on the quote itself, because it is the number that decides whether a scraped bumper is worth claiming for.

The owner’s no claims discount

A claim goes on the learner policy, not on the owner’s annual one. That is why this product is easier to ask a parent for than being added to their policy as a named driver, and it is written into the policy rather than being a courtesy. The detail is set by the broker and the insurer, and it is in the policy wording and the insurance product information document rather than here.

06

How Much Does One Day Learner Driver Insurance Cost?

From £24.52 for one day, on the broker’s published prices.

That is a floor and not a typical price, and your own quote is set by the car, your age and the length you choose. A policy cannot be extended, only bought again.

What sets your price

  • 1 The car Value, insurance group and body type all feed the quote.
  • 2 The learner’s age Learners from 17 are accepted, and a 17 year old pays more than a 30 year old.
  • 3 The length A day costs more than an hour in total but less than buying the hours separately.
  • 4 The extras Breakdown cover, excess protection and legal cover are optional and priced separately.

Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

Who Can Get One Day Learner Driver Insurance?

Learners from 17 on a UK provisional licence, with no points, no claims and no pending prosecutions, practising in a car that normally already has an annual policy, with a supervisor who meets the declaration.

The learner

Learners from 17 on a UK provisional licence are quoted; the upper age limit depends on the insurer. The insurer’s declaration at purchase is usually stricter than the quote, and the quote says so. It asks for a learner with no penalty points, no claims and no pending prosecutions, who is a permanent UK resident for the period the declaration states, who has never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided, and who has no unspent criminal convictions. It applies to provisional licence holders only: a driver with a full licence needs ordinary temporary car cover, where the minimum age depends on the insurer, as young driver insurance explains.

The supervisor

GOV.UK sets out the rules for practising with family or friends: the supervisor must be over 21, qualified to drive the type of car you are learning in, and have held their full licence for three years. The declaration usually goes further: over 25, a full UK, EU or EEA licence held for three years, resident in the UK for two years, and no drink or drug driving conviction in the last five years. Follow the stricter rule, because the policy depends on the declaration being true.

The car

Within the insurer’s value limit, which is £20,000 with one insurer on the panel, up to seven seats, right-hand drive, with a valid MOT, and normally already insured on an annual policy. It must not be a category A or B insurance write-off, must not be modified, and must not be a van, lorry, minibus, motorhome, horsebox, taxi or tipper. Hire cars are excluded too. Enter the registration and the quote shows whether the car is accepted before you plan around it.

08

One Day Compared With an Hour and a Week

Hourly, one-day and weekly cover are the same policy at different lengths. The table sets the three side by side.

All the published prices are the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026. The three lengths are the same policy for a different period, so the cover is identical and the only question is how long you will be practising. Weekly learner driver insurance and monthly learner driver insurance explain the longer lengths.

09

What Happens If You Practise Without the Right Cover or Supervision?

Driving without insurance is a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points, and driving without the right supervision can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and up to 6 points on your provisional licence.

GOV.UK sets out the penalties for driving without insurance, including the fixed penalty, the points and the power of the police to seize the vehicle. On supervision, GOV.UK’s guidance on practising with family or friends sets the fine and points for driving without the right supervisor, and says the supervisor must not use a mobile phone. The policy responds only while the supervisor is in the passenger seat, so a drive without them is a drive without cover as well as an offence in its own right.

The police and insurers check the Motor Insurance Database through askMID, which is updated four times a day, so a new policy can take a few hours to appear. Keep the emailed certificate on your phone in case the database has not caught up when you are stopped. A policy cannot be bought after the event, so a day that ends at 3pm does not cover a collision at 3.10pm.

Questions

One Day Learner Driver Insurance: FAQs

Can I get learner driver insurance for one day?

Yes. Daily learner cover runs from one to 28 days, and a single day is a full 24 hours from the start time you choose. From £24.52 for one day, on the broker’s published prices.

What time does a one day learner policy start and end?

It starts at the time you choose, which can be within minutes of paying or set for later, and it ends exactly 24 hours afterwards. A policy that starts at 9am on Saturday ends at 9am on Sunday. Check the end time on the quote and the certificate, because the policy stops at that minute and not when the practice does.

Can I use one day learner insurance for my driving test?

Yes, for the journey to the test centre, the test itself and the drive home, provided the test centre accepts the car you are using. If you pass, the policy gives you a short grace period to drive home, set by the insurer and shown on the policy, and is then void, so your own full licence insurance must be ready before you drive again. If you do not pass, the policy simply runs to its printed end time.

How much does one day learner insurance cost?

From £24.52 for one day, on the broker’s published prices. Your own quote is set by the car, your age and the length you choose, so treat the published figure as a floor and not a typical price. The quote shows the exact amount before you buy.

Is a day or two hours the right length?

One hour is the minimum and a day is a full 24 hours. The quote prices the length you choose, and a policy cannot be extended once it has started.

Can I get it on my own car for a day?

Yes. The car normally already has an annual policy in force, for example a policy in a parent’s name with you as the keeper; whether the insurer requires one is in its criteria, and the quote says. The one day learner policy sits alongside that policy and never replaces it. A car with no insurance of its own may be outside the criteria, and must not be driven or kept on the road uninsured in any case.

Who has to sit with me?

GOV.UK’s minimum is a supervisor over 21 who is qualified to drive the car and has held a full licence for three years. The insurer’s declaration at purchase is usually stricter: over 25, a full UK, EU or EEA licence held for three years, resident in the UK for two years, and no drink or drug driving conviction in five years. You are covered only while that person is in the passenger seat.

Can I practise on the motorway for the day?

No. GOV.UK says it is illegal to drive on a motorway when practising with family or friends. Motorway practice is only allowed with an approved driving instructor in a car fitted with dual controls, and a longer policy does not change that.

Can I extend a one day learner policy?

No. A policy cannot be stretched, so practice that runs past the end time needs a second policy bought before the first one ends.

Will a claim affect the owner’s no claims discount?

No. The policy is standalone, with its own certificate and policy number, and a claim is handled under it. The owner’s annual policy and no claims discount are untouched.

Does it cost anything to get a quote?

No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
