01

What Is Weekly Car Insurance?

Weekly car insurance is a comprehensive temporary policy that runs for one to four weeks, with cover starting when you choose and ending automatically.

It is sold in whole weeks, and it is the middle length of temporary car insurance. Shorter than that, you are in days: weekend car insurance covers two or three. Longer than four weeks, a single temporary policy cannot stretch, and monthly car insurance explains the 28-day ceiling.

The policy has its own certificate and policy number, and it sits alongside whatever annual insurance the car already carries. A claim on it does not touch the owner’s no claims discount, which is why it suits a car that belongs to someone else.

02

How Do You Get Weekly Car Insurance?

Enter the registration, say who is driving and when cover should start, choose one to four weeks, then check the end date before you pay.

  1. 1

    Enter the registration

The number plate is enough to start. It pulls up the make, model and value of the car, which is most of what the quote is priced on.

  2. 2

Say who is driving and when

Your licence details, your address and the start date and time. Cover can start within minutes of paying, or you can set it for a future date if you are collecting the car later.

  3. 3

    Choose the weeks

One to four on a single policy, chosen when you get the quote.

  4. 4

    Check it, then buy

Read the end date, what is covered, what the excess is and what the optional extras add. The certificate lands in your inbox as soon as the policy is issued, and that certificate is the proof of cover, not the quote. Cover exists only once the policy is issued and the certificate is in hand.

03

When Is Weekly Cover the Right Length?

Weekly cover suits a situation that will last longer than a weekend but has a known end within a month.

A gap between annual policies

A policy lapses, a renewal falls through, or a new car arrives before the annual cover is arranged. A week or two of cover keeps the car insured while the permanent policy is sorted out. GOV.UK sets out the rules on vehicle insurance, and a car kept on the road must be insured throughout.

A car on loan while yours is repaired

If your car is off the road after an accident or a breakdown, a car lent by a friend or a garage may need its own cover. See courtesy car insurance for the rules, including the fact that rental and hire cars are not permitted.

A visitor

A relative who lives in the UK and is staying with you for a few weeks can borrow a car on a weekly policy if they meet the licence rules. A visitor from abroad needs to check the licence conditions carefully, because an international (non-EU) licence is not accepted. See non-UK licence insurance for the details.

A longer shared arrangement

If two people will share one car for a few weeks, put both on the quote, or see additional driver insurance for how a second driver works.

04

What Does Weekly Car Insurance Cover?

It normally covers damage you cause to other people and their property, damage to the car you are driving, fire and theft, with business class 1 use included.

Third party liability

The cover every UK motor policy must carry: injury to other people and damage to their vehicles or property. It is a legal requirement under section 143 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 to have insurance against third party risks when you use a vehicle on a road.

Damage to the car you are driving

Accidental and malicious damage to the car itself, subject to the compulsory excess shown on the schedule. Excess protection and legal cover are available as optional extras.

Fire and theft

Fire damage however it starts, theft of the vehicle, and damage caused during an attempted theft.

What weekly cover excludes

The published exclusions for weekly cover are hire and reward, taxi use, learner driving, racing and motor trade use. In practice:

The detail is set by the broker and the insurer that takes the risk, and it is in the policy wording and the insurance product information document rather than here. Read both before you buy.

05

How Much Does Weekly Car Insurance Cost?

From £46.59 for one week, £54.11 for two weeks and £64.25 for three weeks. Your own quote depends on the driver, the car and the start date.

No figure is published for four weeks, and what moves the price is the same as on any motor policy.

No refund is paid once cover has started, and a policy cannot be extended, only bought again.

Published starting prices

  • 1 week £46.59
  • 2 weeks £54.11
  • 3 weeks £64.25
  • 4 weeks No figure published

What sets your price

  • 1 The car Value, insurance group and whether insurers see many claims on the model.
  • 2 The driver Age, how long the licence has been held, claims and convictions.
  • 3 The start date and time The price is set for when cover begins, so moving the start moves the quote.
  • 4 The length Each extra week adds to the price, but not by the cost of a new policy.

Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

06

Who Can Get Weekly Car Insurance?

Drivers aged 17 to 75 with a full UK licence. The minimum age and the licence types accepted vary by insurer.

You also need a permanent UK address, and you must never have had insurance refused, cancelled or voided. Points and convictions are declared on the form within each insurer’s limits: see temporary car insurance for convicted drivers.

The car must be worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, have a valid MOT and not be declared SORN, unless it is being driven to a pre-booked MOT. It cannot be a hire or rental vehicle, imported, left-hand drive or modified, and it must weigh no more than 3.5 tonnes with no more than seven seats.

A van up to 3.5 tonnes has its own cover, under temporary van insurance.

07

What Happens When the Weeks Run Out?

The policy ends on the date and time shown on the certificate, and driving past it means driving without insurance, which is an offence.

Nothing renews by itself. A policy that ends on a Sunday evening ends then, whether or not the car is back, so note the end date and set a reminder a few days earlier.

If you still need the car, arrange a further policy before the first ends. A second policy is a new purchase, with a new quote and the same eligibility rules, so it is not guaranteed to be accepted. If the car is stopped and the police check the Motor Insurance Database, they will see the policy if it was in force. Policies are submitted to the database four times a day, so keep the certificate on your phone.

08

Weekly Cover Compared With a Weekend and a Month

Weekend, weekly and monthly cover are the same policy at different lengths. The table sets the three side by side.

The weekend and weekly prices are the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026. The £81.41 has no basis period published, so it is not strictly like for like. The products are the same policy at different lengths, so the cover is identical. Weekend car insurance and monthly car insurance explain the other two lengths.

Before you start

Can you get it?

If you and the car fit these criteria, a quote is likely.

The driver

  • Aged 17 to 75, minimum age depending on the insurer
  • A full UK licence from the DVLA or DVA, or an EU or EEA licence with at least 12 months of UK residence
  • A permanent UK address
  • Never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided
  • Points and convictions declared on the form and priced within each insurer's limits

The car

  • Worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band
  • A valid MOT, and not declared SORN, unless you are driving to a pre-booked MOT
  • Up to 3.5 tonnes and no more than seven seats
  • Not a hire or rental vehicle, and not held by the police
  • Not imported, left-hand drive or modified, apart from factory options or mobility adaptations

Criteria are set by each insurer on the broker’s panel and vary between them. Acceptance is always the insurer’s decision.

Questions

Weekly Car Insurance: FAQs

How long can weekly car insurance last?

One to four weeks on a single policy. You choose the number of weeks and the start time, and the policy ends automatically. Four weeks is the same as the 28-day maximum on any temporary car policy.

How much does weekly car insurance cost?

The published starting prices here were £46.59 for one week, £54.11 for two and £64.25 for three, based on the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026. Your own quote depends on the driver, the car and the start time, so treat these as floors rather than typical prices.

Is weekly car insurance fully comprehensive?

Yes. The policy is comprehensive as standard, so damage to the car you are driving is included alongside damage you cause to other people and their property. Check the policy wording and the compulsory excess before you buy.

What does weekly car insurance not cover?

It excludes hire and reward, taxi use, learner driving, racing and motor trade use. Business class 1 use, such as driving to meetings and site visits, is included, but deliveries and carrying passengers for payment are not.

Can I use weekly cover while my own car is being repaired?

With some insurers. Whether a car lent by a garage, dealer or friend can be covered depends on the insurer, and the quote will say so. Rental and hire cars are not permitted. Ask the garage first, because some courtesy cars come with the garage’s own insurance.

Can I use weekly cover between two annual policies?

It is often used that way, to cover a short gap while an annual policy is arranged. The car must have a valid MOT and not be SORN, and it must be insured at all times if it is on the road, so make sure the new policy starts before the weekly one ends.

Will the owner’s no claims discount be affected?

No. A weekly policy is standalone, with its own policy number, so a claim on it is handled under that policy rather than the owner’s annual insurance. Their no claims discount and renewal are untouched.

Does weekly cover renew by itself?

No. Policies never auto-renew, and there is no refund once cover has started. If you need longer than you bought, arrange a further policy before the first one ends so that there is no gap.

Does it cost anything to get a quote?

No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
