01
What Is Test Drive Insurance?
Test drive insurance is a short temporary policy on a specific car, bought so a prospective buyer is insured while they drive it before purchase.
A dealer can arrange its own cover for test drives, and it is worth asking. A private sale is different. You are driving a stranger’s car, on a stranger’s annual policy, and that policy was priced for the seller and perhaps one or two named drivers, not for you.
Temporary cover closes the gap. It is a comprehensive policy on the car you want to try, bought in your name for an hour or more, ending automatically. It is temporary car insurance used for one very ordinary purpose.
02
Why Is a Private Sale Test Drive Risky?
The seller’s policy almost never covers a buyer, and the "driving other cars" extension on an annual policy is not built for this either.
Think about what each person is relying on. The seller assumes their insurance covers you because the car is insured. You assume you are covered because the seller said it would be fine. Neither assumption is safe.
The seller’s policy
A policy lists who may drive. A buyer who has never been named on it, and who the insurer has never been told about, is usually outside it. Even if a policy allows any driver with permission, it may carry age or experience limits you do not meet. Insured does not mean you are insured.
"Driving other cars" cover
Some annual policies include a benefit that lets the policyholder drive other cars. Where it exists at all it is usually third party only, with conditions, and it covers the policyholder, not a buyer you are meeting for the first time. It will not pay to repair the car you damage.
What goes wrong
If you drive uninsured, GOV.UK sets out the penalties: a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points, or a court case with an unlimited fine or a disqualification, and the police can seize the vehicle. If you are insured only third party and the car is damaged, you may owe the seller the repair bill. Neither is how you want to start negotiating a price.
03
How Does an Hour of Cover Help?
It gives you comprehensive cover on the car itself, so damage to the car you are driving is covered as well as damage you cause to others.
The policy has its own certificate and policy number, and it sits alongside the seller’s annual insurance. A claim is handled under your policy, so the seller’s no claims discount is untouched, which is why most sellers are relaxed about a buyer bringing their own cover.
You also drive the car the way you would own it, without a nervous eye on whether the seller’s insurer would object. That is worth more than the test drive time: the cover lets you take the car on the sort of road you will use it on, rather than once around the block.

How Do You Get Test Drive Insurance?
Enter the registration of the car you plan to drive, say who is driving and when, choose the hours, then check the quote and buy before you set off.
- 1
Enter the registration
Ask the seller for the number plate in advance. It pulls up the make, model and value of the car, which is most of what the quote is priced on.
- 2
Say who is driving and when
Your licence details, your address and the start time. Cover can start within minutes of paying, or you can set it for the time of the viewing.
- 3
Choose the hours
One hour is the minimum. Choose the hours when you get the quote, allowing for the viewing as well as the drive, because a policy cannot be extended once it has started.
- 4
Check it, then buy
Read what is covered and what the excess is. The certificate lands in your inbox as soon as you pay. Cover exists only once the policy is issued and you hold the certificate, so do not drive on the strength of a quote.
05
What Should You Check Before You Drive?
Check three documents before you start the engine: the MOT history, the tax status and the V5C log book, which must match the car and the seller.
GOV.UK’s guide to buying a vehicle starts with the same checks: see the V5C, check the details match DVLA’s information and check the MOT history. It takes minutes and is worth doing before you drive, not after you have paid.
If the car fails any of those, stop. A policy for a car that does not meet the criteria is worth nothing when it matters.
- The MOT. Check the MOT history with the registration. The standard criteria for temporary car cover require a valid MOT, and a car without one does not qualify.
- The tax. Check whether the car is taxed. Tax and MOT also tell you whether the car is SORN, which is not covered unless the journey is to a pre-booked MOT.
- The V5C. The name and address on it should match the person selling. If they do not, ask why. A seller who cannot produce a V5C is a warning in its own right.
06
How Much Does Test Drive Insurance Cost?
From £11.72 for one hour and £17.73 for four hours. Your own quote depends on the car, the driver and the start time.
Those are floors, not typical prices. What moves the price is the same as on any motor policy, and the four things that matter most are below.
The car must be worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, and drivers must be 17 to 75 with a full UK licence, with the minimum age and the licence types accepted varying by insurer. If you want to test drive a van instead, see temporary van insurance.
What sets your price
- 1 The car Value, group and whether it is a model insurers see claims on.
- 2 The driver Age, licence history, claims and convictions.
- 3 The hours The number of hours sets the price.
- 4 The start time Cover starting at an unusual hour is priced differently from a daytime policy.
Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

What If You Want to Buy the Car on the Day?
Buy a second policy before the first ends, or arrange drive away cover, because a test drive policy covers driving the car, not owning it.
The sale and the drive home are two separate risks. Once you have paid, the car is yours to move, and if the test drive policy has expired by then you are uninsured the moment you pull away. Allow for this when you choose the hours, since the viewing, a negotiation and a handover all take time.
Drive away insurance is built for the next step: a policy for the drive home that also gives you time to choose an annual policy. If a friend or partner is going to drive the car, or you are the second driver, additional driver insurance covers the case. If you are new to driving and worry about being accepted, read new driver insurance first. For a purchase made through a dealer rather than privately, the dealer’s cover may apply, so ask before the test drive.
Before you start
Can you get it?
If you and the car fit these criteria, a quote is likely.
The driver
- Aged 17 to 75, minimum age depending on the insurer
- A full UK licence from the DVLA or DVA, or an EU or EEA licence with at least 12 months of UK residence
- A permanent UK address
- Never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided
- Points and convictions declared on the form and priced within each insurer's limits
The car
- Worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band
- A valid MOT, and not declared SORN, unless you are driving to a pre-booked MOT
- Up to 3.5 tonnes and no more than seven seats
- Not a hire or rental vehicle, and not held by the police
- Not imported, left-hand drive or modified, apart from factory options or mobility adaptations
Criteria are set by each insurer on the broker’s panel and vary between them. Acceptance is always the insurer’s decision.
Questions
Test Drive Insurance: FAQs
Does the seller’s insurance cover me on a test drive?
Rarely. A policy is written for named drivers, and a private seller’s policy normally does not extend to a stranger taking the wheel. Do not take their word for it: ask to see the policy wording, and if there is any doubt, buy your own cover first.
What is "driving other cars" cover?
It is a feature some annual policies include for the policyholder, allowing them to drive someone else’s car. Where it exists it is normally third party only, so damage to the car you are driving is not included, and it often has conditions. It does not help a buyer who is not the policyholder.
Is it fine to test drive a car I do not yet own?
Only if you are insured to do so. Driving without insurance is an offence, and GOV.UK says the police could give a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points. A short temporary policy on the car is the way to be sure.
How long should the cover be for?
One hour is the minimum, and the quote prices the hours you choose. Allow for the time it takes to look the car over and talk it through, because a policy cannot be extended once it has started.
How much does test drive insurance cost?
From £11.72 for one hour, on the broker’s published prices. Your own quote depends on you, the car and the start time, so treat it as a floor rather than a typical price.
What should I check about the car before I drive?
Check the MOT history, check the car is taxed, and check the V5C log book matches the registration and the seller. GOV.UK’s buying guide recommends the same. A car without a valid MOT, or one that is on SORN, does not meet the standard criteria for temporary car cover.
Will a test drive claim affect the seller’s no claims discount?
No. The temporary policy is standalone, with its own certificate and policy number, so a claim on it is handled under that policy and not under the seller’s annual insurance. That is also a reason sellers are happy for you to bring your own cover.
Can I use test drive cover to buy the car on the day?
The policy covers driving the car for the time you set, not owning it. If you buy and drive away, you need cover for the journey home. Extend by buying a second policy before the first ends, or see drive away insurance.
Does it cost anything to get a quote?
No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
