01

What Is Monthly Van Insurance?

Monthly van insurance is the longest single temporary van policy: up to 28 days of comprehensive cover for a van up to 3.5 tonnes, starting when you choose and ending by itself.

It is not a subscription and it does not bill you each month. It is one policy, bought once, for a fixed period of up to four weeks, on its own certificate and policy number. That makes it the top end of temporary van insurance, which runs from one hour upwards, and the van version of temporary car insurance at its longest length.

The policy is separate from the van owner’s annual insurance, so a claim on it does not touch their no claims discount. Business class 1 use is included as standard, and carriage of your own goods can be added as an option. Hire and reward, which means carrying other people’s goods for payment, is a separate product.

02

How Do You Get Monthly Van Insurance?

Enter the registration, say who is driving and when, choose up to 28 days and the use, then check the end date and the policy wording before you pay.

  1. 1

    Enter the registration

The number plate pulls up the make, model, weight and value of the van, which is most of what the quote is priced on. The van must have a valid MOT and must not be SORN, seized, a hire or rental van or a converted campervan.

  2. 2

Say who is driving and when

Your licence details, your address and the start date and time. Cover can start within minutes of paying, or you can set a start for the day you collect the van. Only one driver can be named on a policy.

  3. 3

Choose the length and the use

Up to 28 days. Count the days to the date you expect to hand the van back and allow a margin, because a policy cannot be extended once it is running. Business class 1 is included, and carriage of your own goods is optional.

  4. 4

    Check it, then buy

Read the end date, what is covered, what is excluded and what the optional extras add. The certificate is emailed the moment you pay, and that certificate, not the quote, is the proof of cover. Cover exists only once the policy has been issued and the certificate is in your inbox.

03

Is a Month 28 Days or a Calendar Month?

A month here means 28 days: four weeks counted from the start time you choose, not a calendar month of 30 or 31 days.

That matters when a job is tied to a date. A policy bought to start at 9am on the 1st ends four weeks later, so a van needed until the last day of a 31 day month leaves a gap of three days. Count from the day you collect the van to the day you hand it back, then match the length to the days, not to the name of the month.

For a single day or a weekend, one day van insurance is priced for it. For a longer stretch with a definite end date, 28 days is the length to look at first.

04

When Is Monthly Van Cover the Right Choice?

It suits any stretch of up to four weeks when you will drive a van you do not insure all year: the gap before an annual policy, a contract, a season, a trial or a long loan.

The gap before an annual policy

You have bought a van and the annual policy cannot start yet, or you are changing insurer and want a clean start date. Twenty-eight days is long enough to arrange a permanent policy without pressure, and the temporary policy has its own certificate, so the van is not left uninsured while you do. Do not leave the annual policy to the last week, because a second temporary policy is a fresh quote with no guarantee of acceptance.

A contract or a season

A tradesperson whose own van is off the road, a small business with an extra pair of hands for a fixed contract, or a seasonal job such as a harvest, a festival or a Christmas peak. Business class 1 use, which covers driving to sites, meetings and suppliers, is included as standard. If the work is carrying other people’s goods for payment, that is hire and reward, and the temporary courier insurance page sets out the separate product.

A new business testing whether it needs a van

A start-up that is not sure the work justifies buying or leasing a van can borrow one for four weeks and see. A short policy limits the commitment while the figures settle.

A borrowed van, or one coming off SORN

A van lent by a friend or relative for a long project, a renovation or a long job away from home, with the owner’s annual policy left alone. A van that has been declared off the road under SORN and needs a month of work can also be insured for the period, but the standard criteria for temporary van cover say the van cannot be SORN when cover starts, so the SORN declaration has to be ended first.

05

What Does Monthly Van Insurance Cover?

It covers the van and your liability to other people, comprehensively, but it does not cover tools, cargo or goods in transit, and it does not cover wear and tear or breakdown.

What is covered

Third party liability for injury to other people and damage to their vehicles and property, which every UK motor policy must carry. Accidental and malicious damage to the van itself, fire and theft, subject to the excess shown on the schedule. Business class 1 use is included as standard, which means driving to meetings, sites and suppliers in connection with your work.

What is not covered

Tools, cargo and goods in transit are outside the policy. If a thief takes a toolkit from the back of the van, or a customer’s goods are damaged on a journey, the van policy pays for the van and not the contents. Wear and tear and mechanical breakdown are outside it too. Over four weeks the exposure is real, so a separate tools policy or goods in transit policy is worth arranging before the van is on a job, not after a loss.

Optional extras

Carriage of your own goods can be added if you are moving your own belongings, stock or materials. Excess protection and legal cover are optional extras and are priced in the quote. The detail is set by the broker and the insurer that takes the risk, and it is in the policy wording and the insurance product information document rather than here.

06

How Much Does Monthly Van Insurance Cost?

No price for 28 days is published here: the longest published figure is £62.64 for two weeks, based on the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026, and the quote is the only way to find a 28 day price.

The other published starting prices, on the same basis, were £21.44 for one hour, £15.36 for one day and £51.82 for one week. They are floors, not typical prices, and a 28 day price should not be worked out by multiplying any of them. A two week figure is a guide to the scale of the cost, not a promise about four weeks, so the useful step is to enter the registration and read the quote.

A day has been published below an hour on this product, so shorter is not always lower. Price the length the job needs, and if the work might spill into a second week, price two weeks and four weeks rather than buying one week and finding it has to be bought again.

What sets your price

  • 1 The van Value, weight and the type of body.
  • 2 The driver Age, how long the licence has been held, claims and convictions.
  • 3 The use Carriage of your own goods adds to the price; hire and reward is a separate product.
  • 4 The length The number of days sets the price.

Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

07

Who Can Get Monthly Van Insurance?

Drivers aged 19 to 74 with a full UK licence, driving a van up to 3.5 tonnes with a valid MOT. Age limits, the licence types accepted and the value band vary by insurer.

The driver

Aged 19 to 74, with the limits varying by insurer, a full licence rather than a provisional one, and a permanent UK address. Points and motoring convictions are declared on the form within each insurer’s limits. The criteria for this product also ask that you have never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided, and that you have no unspent criminal conviction or prosecution pending. One driver is named per policy.

The van

Up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, with a valid MOT. It must not be SORN, seized by the police, a hire or rental van or a converted campervan, which needs temporary motorhome insurance instead.

Who cannot

Drivers under 19 cannot get van cover on the panel. Provisional licence holders need temporary learner driver insurance on a car, not a van. Anyone driving a hired van is excluded, and anyone carrying goods for payment needs temporary courier insurance.

08

28 Days Compared With an Annual Policy

A 28 day policy, an annual policy and an annual policy paid monthly are three different commitments. The table sets them side by side.

The difference that decides it is whether you are keeping the van. GOV.UK sets out the rules on vehicle insurance: a registered keeper must keep a vehicle insured at all times, or declare it off the road under SORN. That is continuous insurance enforcement, and it applies even when the van is parked and not being driven. A 28 day policy always ends, so a van you own and keep needs annual insurance behind it, with the temporary policy used only for the bridge. For anything shorter, weekly van insurance and one day van insurance are priced for it.

09

What Happens If You Drive the Van Without the Right Cover?

Driving without insurance is a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points, or an unlimited fine and possible disqualification at court, and the van can be seized.

GOV.UK sets out the penalties for driving without insurance: the police can seize, and in some cases destroy, the vehicle. A policy that ends before the van is back also leaves a gap, so check the end date and time on the certificate against the day the job finishes. Driving on a use the policy does not include, such as carrying goods for payment on a policy without hire and reward, can leave a claim unpaid, which is the same loss by a slower route.

The police and insurers check the Motor Insurance Database, which is updated four times a day, so a new policy can take a few hours to appear. Keep the emailed certificate on your phone in case the database has not caught up when you are stopped. If the van is needed after the 28 days, buy the next policy before the first ends, because a second policy is a fresh quote with no guarantee of the same price or acceptance.

Questions

Monthly Van Insurance: FAQs

Can I insure my van for 1 month?

Yes, for up to 28 days. That is the longest a single temporary van policy runs, so it is the nearest thing to a month. Choose the start time and the end date when you get the quote, and check both on the certificate before you drive.

Can I get van insurance for only 1 month?

Yes. A temporary policy is bought for a fixed period and ends by itself, so there is no year-long commitment and nothing to cancel. The van must meet the standard criteria for temporary van cover: up to 3.5 tonnes, valid MOT, not SORN and not a hire van.

Is a month 28 days or a calendar month?

Twenty-eight days. The longest single policy runs for four weeks counted from the start time you choose, so a policy bought on 1 March ends on 29 March, not 1 April. If the job runs to the end of the calendar month, the last days need a second policy or an annual one.

How much is 1 month van insurance?

No price for 28 days is published. The longest published figure is £62.64 for two weeks, the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026, and the quote is the only way to find a 28 day price. Treat any published starting price as a floor rather than a typical price.

Can you insure a van for 3 months?

Not on one policy, which stops at 28 days. Back-to-back policies are possible, but each is a fresh quote with no guarantee of the same price or acceptance.

Can I pay monthly for van insurance instead?

Paying monthly is a different thing. It is an annual policy paid in instalments, which commits you to a full year of cover and usually adds interest. A 28 day policy is a single purchase for a short period, with nothing left to pay when it ends.

Can I get monthly van insurance under 21?

With some insurers. The minimum age for van cover varies by insurer, and the lowest on the panel is 19, so a driver aged 19 or 20 may be quoted and a younger one will not.

What is the lowest-cost way to insure a van for a month?

There is no single lowest-cost insurer. The length and the use set the price, and both are shown on the quote before you pay.

Can I extend a 28 day van policy?

No. A policy cannot be extended, only bought again, and the new one is a fresh quote with the same eligibility rules. Buy it before the first ends and check that the new certificate starts when the old one stops, so there is no gap.

Does it cost anything to get a quote?

No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
