01

Can You Get Temporary Car Insurance in Northern Ireland?

Yes, if you meet the standard criteria for temporary car cover: Northern Ireland licences issued by the DVA are accepted, a permanent UK address includes Northern Ireland, and the car must be UK registered.

There is no separate Northern Ireland product. The same criteria and the same lengths apply across the UK, and that includes Northern Ireland. This page sets out what that means in practice and what it does not. In particular, nothing here says anything about local rules, local prices or local products, because none are published.

For drivers who fit, this is temporary car insurance in its ordinary form: comprehensive, from one hour to 28 days, with its own certificate and its own policy number.

02

How Do You Get Cover in Northern Ireland?

Enter the registration, add your licence and address details, choose the dates, then read the quote and the policy wording before you pay.

  1. 1

    Enter the registration

The plate pulls up the make, model and value of the car. It must be UK registered and worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, with a valid MOT.

  2. 2

    Enter your licence and address

A full licence issued by the DVA is accepted. Give your permanent address in Northern Ireland, which counts as a permanent UK address.

  3. 3

    Choose the dates

From one hour to 28 days on one policy. Choose the length that matches the real need: a day trip, a weekend or a few weeks.

  4. 4

    Check it, then buy

Read what is covered, the excess and the optional extras. Wait for the emailed certificate before you drive. The certificate, not the quote, is the proof of cover.

03

When Is Short-Term Cover the Right Choice?

When you can drive legally but do not own the car, or do not want a year of cover for a short need.

Borrowing a car

A friend or family member lends you a car for a few days. A separate temporary policy keeps your driving away from their annual insurance and their no claims discount. See additional driver insurance for how that works from the owner’s side.

A day or a weekend

For a single day, one day car insurance is priced for exactly that. For a longer stay, weekly car insurance runs from one to four weeks.

Visiting from elsewhere in the UK

A driver with a DVLA licence visiting Northern Ireland is quoted on the same criteria, as is one with a DVA licence visiting England or Scotland. The permanent UK address and the UK-registered car are what the quote looks for.

04

What Happens If You Cross Into the Republic of Ireland?

It depends on the insurer: whether the policy covers driving in the Republic, and on what terms, is set by the insurer behind your quote, so check the policy wording before you cross the border.

Many drivers in Northern Ireland cross the border often, so this is the point to read twice. Inside the UK the policy is comprehensive. Where an insurer gives cover in the Republic, it is usually the minimum the law there requires, which may be less than UK third party cover, so damage to the car you are driving is not covered in the same way.

Some insurers also require the journey to start and end in the UK. A day trip from Northern Ireland and back fits that, but nothing beyond what the quote and the wording say may be assumed. GOV.UK explains the rules on driving abroad, and European car insurance sets out what to check before a longer trip.

05

How Does Northern Ireland Fit the Criteria?

It fits: a DVA licence counts as a full UK licence, and a Northern Ireland address counts as a permanent UK address. The insurer’s other criteria still apply.

The criteria are written for the UK as a whole. A driver with a licence from the DVA is treated in the same way as one with a licence from the DVLA, and both are accepted as full UK licences. Two things sometimes cause confusion.

The first is the car. It must be UK registered, which a car on Northern Ireland plates is. The second is the address. A permanent address in Northern Ireland is a permanent UK address, so a driver living in Belfast, Derry or a village near the border has the same standing as one in London.

What this page does not do is claim anything beyond that. There is no published Northern Ireland price list, no special product and no promise about cover on the ferry or in any other country. Where the published criteria are silent, the answer is to read the quote and the policy wording before relying on it. If you are borrowing the car, you also need the owner’s permission, and the car needs a valid MOT.

06

What Does the Policy Cover?

Comprehensive cover as standard within the UK: damage to other people and their property, damage to the car you are driving, fire and theft.

Business class 1 use, meaning meetings and site visits, is included. Deliveries, hire and reward and carrying passengers for payment are not. The policy is standalone, so a claim on it does not affect the owner’s no claims discount. The policy wording and the insurance product information document set out the detail.

07

How Much Does It Cost?

From £21.87 for one day and from £46.59 for one week. Your own quote depends on the driver, the car and the dates, and there is no separate price list for Northern Ireland.

What moves the price is the same as on any motor policy, and the four things that matter most are below.

What sets your price

  • 1 The driver Age, licence history, claims and points.
  • 2 The car Value and insurance group.
  • 3 The length The number of hours or days sets the price.
  • 4 The start time Priced as part of the policy.

Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

08

Who Can Get Cover?

Drivers aged 17 to 75 with a full UK licence from the DVA or the DVLA, a permanent UK address, with any points or convictions declared on the form within each insurer’s limits. The minimum age varies by insurer.

You must never have had insurance refused, cancelled or voided. The car must be UK registered, worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, with a valid MOT, not SORN, up to 3.5 tonnes and no more than seven seats. It cannot be a hire or rental vehicle, an import, left-hand drive or modified.

Learner drivers need their own product, and the minimum age on the car product varies by insurer. Anything about Northern Ireland beyond what is set out here is not something this page can claim. GOV.UK sets out the law on vehicle insurance, and you can check any plate on askMID. Keep the certificate on your phone in case the database has not yet updated.

Before you start

Can you get it?

If you and the car fit these criteria, a quote is likely.

The driver

  • Aged 17 to 75, minimum age depending on the insurer
  • A full UK licence from the DVLA or DVA, or an EU or EEA licence with at least 12 months of UK residence
  • A permanent UK address
  • Never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided
  • Points and convictions declared on the form and priced within each insurer's limits

The car

  • Worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band
  • A valid MOT, and not declared SORN, unless you are driving to a pre-booked MOT
  • Up to 3.5 tonnes and no more than seven seats
  • Not a hire or rental vehicle, and not held by the police
  • Not imported, left-hand drive or modified, apart from factory options or mobility adaptations

Criteria are set by each insurer on the broker’s panel and vary between them. Acceptance is always the insurer’s decision.

Questions

Temporary Car Insurance in Northern Ireland: FAQs

Can I get temporary car insurance in Northern Ireland?

Yes, if you meet the criteria. Licences issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland are accepted, a permanent UK address includes Northern Ireland, and the car must be UK registered. The length and the criteria are the same as for the rest of the UK.

Is a Northern Ireland driving licence accepted?

Yes. A full licence issued by the DVA is accepted in the same way as one issued by the DVLA. The licence must be full rather than provisional, and the driver must meet the insurer’s age limits, from 17 to 75.

Does the price differ in Northern Ireland?

There is no separate price list for Northern Ireland. Your own quote is set by the driver, the car and the dates, as it is anywhere else, so the quote is the figure that applies to you.

Does the car have to be registered in Northern Ireland?

It must be UK registered. The criteria do not say the car has to be registered in a particular part of the UK, but it must be worth between £500 and £65,000, with each insurer setting its own band, with a valid MOT and not SORN. Check the quote if you are unsure.

Can I drive across the border into the Republic of Ireland?

It depends on the insurer. Whether the policy covers driving in the Republic, and on what terms, is set by the insurer behind your quote, so check the quote and the policy wording before you cross the border. Where cover abroad is given it is usually the legal minimum for that country. Our page on European cover explains the detail.

Is the Republic of Ireland covered by the same comprehensive cover?

Not usually. Where a policy covers driving abroad at all, it is normally the minimum legal cover for that country, which may be less than UK third party cover, so damage to the car you are driving is not covered in the same way. Whether and how the Republic is covered depends on the insurer, so read the wording before you cross the border.

Can I use the policy to take the car on a ferry to Great Britain?

The criteria and the policy wording say what is covered, and this page does not make any promise beyond them. Check the policy wording before travelling, and read the quote to see what applies to your journey.

Do I need a certificate to drive?

Yes. Cover exists only once the policy has been issued and you have the certificate. Keep it on your phone in case the Motor Insurance Database has not yet updated.

Does it cost anything to get a quote?

No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
