Terms and conditions

The terms for using this site, and which terms apply to what.

Tempinsuranceuk.com is run by Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, trading as TempQuote. We introduce you to GoShorty, an FCA-authorised broker, which prepares your quote and arranges the policy with one of its insurers. Three firms, three sets of terms. This page is ours, and it tells you where the other two begin.

1. Who these terms are between

Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, and you. The company is registered in England and Wales under company number 15008284, with its registered office at Sentinel House, Ancells Business Park, Harvest Crescent, Fleet, Hampshire, GU51 2UZ. In these terms "we", "us" and "our" mean Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, and "you" means the person using the site. TempQuote is a trading style of that company and not a separate legal entity, so the contract is with the company.

The web address is not a trading name

This service is reached at tempinsuranceuk.com. That address is descriptive: it says what the site is for. It is not a trading name, it is not a company, and no firm of that name is a party to these terms. The firm you are dealing with is Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, whichever address brought you here.

Accepting them

Using the site means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site. Using the quote form confirms that you have read them and accept them.

The other documents that make up our arrangement

Our privacy policy governs what we do with your personal data, our cookie policy covers what we store on your device, and our complaints policy sets out what happens if something goes wrong. Together with this page they are the whole of our arrangement with you about the site. Questions go through the contact page.

2. Which terms apply?

Three firms are involved in a temporary policy bought through this site, and each has its own terms. None of them covers the other two’s part. The cards at the top of this page summarise them; this section says where each begins and ends.

  1. TempQuote: Website Terms of Use. This page. They cover everything you do on tempinsuranceuk.com: reading the guides, using the quote form, and the hand-off to GoShorty. They stop at the moment you arrive on GoShorty’s site.
  2. GoShorty: Broker Terms of Business. GoShorty’s own contract with you as its customer. They cover the quote, the arrangement of the policy, its fees and charges, payment, cancellation, your policy documents and its complaints procedure. They are at goshorty.co.uk/terms-of-business, and GoShorty presents them to you during its quote journey. Section 4 says more.
  3. Your insurer: policy terms. The insurance contract itself, with the insurer GoShorty places you with. The policy booklet, schedule, statement of fact and certificate set out what is covered, what is excluded, who may drive, the excess, the conditions you must meet, how cancellation works and what you must do if you claim. Section 5 says where to find them and why to read them before you pay.

Where the line falls

We are responsible for this website: what it says, how it works, what it does with the registration you type, and the introduction it makes. GoShorty is responsible for the sale: the questions it asks, the price it quotes, the policy it arranges, the money it takes and the documents it issues. The insurer is responsible for the cover: what it pays, what it excludes, and the decision on a claim. A website obligation cannot be enforced against the broker or the insurer, and an insurance obligation cannot be enforced against us, because we are not a party to the insurance contract.

3. What we do, and what we do not

TempQuote is a trading style of Simply Quote Comparison Ltd. We are an introducer, not an insurer or a broker, and we do not give advice or recommend a policy. When you ask for a quote we pass you to GoShorty, a trading style of Complex to Clear Group Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference 751221. Your policy, your price and your cover are arranged by GoShorty and its insurers, not by us.

Our regulatory position

Simply Quote Comparison Ltd is entered on the Financial Services Register as an Introducer Appointed Representative of Seopa Ltd, under reference 1011184. Seopa Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference 313860. GoShorty is a trading style of Complex to Clear Group Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference 751221. We introduce you to it as an Introducer Appointed Representative of Seopa Ltd (FCA reference number 1011184). What we do is the same whatever that basis: we introduce you to GoShorty and nothing more. We do not advise you, arrange cover on your behalf, recommend one policy over another, or handle your money.

How to check it

All three firms’ entries are public. Search the Financial Services Register for reference 1011184 to find Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, 313860 to find Seopa Ltd, and 751221 to find Complex to Clear Group Limited. We would encourage you to, for this site and for any other.

What we are not

  • Not an insurer. We do not underwrite risk, we hold no premium, we make no decision about a claim and we pay no claim.
  • Not a broker. We do not arrange cover for you, we do not administer a policy, and we hold no client money. GoShorty is the broker.
  • Not advice. Nothing on this site is legal, financial or insurance advice, and nothing on it is a personal recommendation. We do not assess whether a policy suits you, and GoShorty sells on a non-advised basis too, so that assessment is yours.
  • Not a comparison. We introduce you to one broker. Other brokers and insurers offer temporary cover on terms we never see, and we do not claim otherwise.

Your contract is with the broker and its insurer

If you take out a policy, you buy it through GoShorty, and the insurance contract is with the insurer it places you with. Its price, its terms, its exclusions and its claims handling are their responsibility. We are not a party to it, we cannot vary it, and we cannot make a decision under it. Changing the start time, extending cover, cancelling, asking for a refund, getting a certificate, making a claim and disputing a decision all go to GoShorty. We could not help even if we wanted to, because we have no access to your policy.

4. GoShorty’s terms

GoShorty is a trading style of Complex to Clear Group Limited, registered in England and Wales under company number 05044963 and authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference 751221. It publishes two separate documents, and it matters which one you are reading.

Its Terms of Business

These govern your relationship with GoShorty as its customer, from the moment you start a quote on its site. At the time of writing they explain that it arranges general insurance as an independent broker on a non-advised, information-only basis; that it charges an administration fee, disclosed before you buy, and separate charges for mid-term changes and cancellations; that policies of 30 days or less are not covered by the 14-day cooling-off right that applies to longer policies, so a short policy is normally not refundable once it has started; that you will be sent a schedule, a statement of fact, a policy booklet and a certificate, which you must check; and how to complain to it and, if unresolved, to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Read them at goshorty.co.uk/terms-of-business. They are GoShorty’s words, not ours, and the current version on its site is the one that applies.

Its Website Terms of Use

GoShorty also publishes terms of use for goshorty.co.uk. Those apply only while you are on GoShorty’s own website, in the same way that this page applies only to ours. They do not govern tempinsuranceuk.com, and nothing on this site is published under them.

When you are told

Our quote form says beneath its button that quotes and cover are provided by GoShorty, and the page that hands you across links to its Terms of Business and privacy notice before you continue. GoShorty then presents its terms within its own journey before you pay. You should not need this page to find them; it is here so that you can.

5. Your insurer’s policy terms

The policy is a contract between you and the insurer. Its documents, not this page and not GoShorty’s terms, decide what you are covered for.

What the documents are

  • The policy booklet (sometimes called the policy wording): the full terms of the cover, the exclusions, the conditions you must keep to, and the claims procedure.
  • The schedule: the particulars of your policy, including the vehicle, the driver, the dates and times, the use allowed and the excess.
  • The statement of fact: the answers you gave, as the insurer has recorded them. If anything on it is wrong, say so before you drive.
  • The certificate of insurance: the legal evidence that the vehicle is insured, which is what the police and the Motor Insurance Database rely on.

Where to find them

GoShorty shows the key policy information during its quote journey, before you pay, and sends the full documents by email once you have bought. They are also available to download from GoShorty’s customer area at your.goshorty.co.uk/. We never hold a copy, so a request for a document goes to GoShorty.

Why to read them before you pay

Two policies at the same price can differ on the excess, on who may drive, on what use is covered, on whether driving abroad is included, and on what is excluded. A short policy is normally not refundable once it has started, so the time to find a condition you cannot meet is before you buy, not after. The eligibility conditions, in particular, are the insurer’s: an age, a licence type, a vehicle or a driving history outside them means no cover, however the quote looked.

What they require of you

Keeping the vehicle in the condition the policy requires. Using it only for the use the schedule allows. Telling the insurer, through GoShorty, if anything you declared changes. Reporting an incident within the time the policy gives, whether or not you intend to claim, and not admitting liability at the roadside. Cooperating with the insurer’s handling of a claim. These are terms of the insurance contract, and breaking one can reduce or defeat a claim.

Cancellation

Cancellation rights depend on the length of the policy and on the insurer’s terms. GoShorty’s Terms of Business set out which policies carry a cooling-off right and what a cancellation costs, and the policy booklet sets out the insurer’s own position. Nothing in these website terms gives or removes a cancellation right.

6. Who may use the site

Age and eligibility

Anyone may read the site. Whether you can be covered is decided by GoShorty and its insurers, not by us: they set the age range, the licence types, the vehicles and the driving history they will accept, and apply those criteria on their own site. See our privacy policy for what we do if a child’s details reach us.

Drivers and vehicles in the United Kingdom

The cover we introduce you to is for UK drivers and UK vehicles. Our guides are written for Great Britain, and each one says so where the rules in Northern Ireland differ.

Someone else’s vehicle

Temporary cover is often for a car that belongs to someone else. If you enter a registration that is not yours, you confirm that you have the owner’s permission to insure and drive it, and that you are entitled to use the registration to ask for a quote. That responsibility is yours, because we have no way of checking.

7. The information you give

Why it matters so much

An insurance quote is a price for a described risk. If the description is wrong, the price is wrong, and the insurer may be entitled to reduce a claim, refuse it outright, or treat the policy as though it never existed. On a motor policy that can leave you uninsured on the road, which is an offence in itself.

The duty the law puts on you

Which duty applies depends on whether your policy is a consumer contract or a commercial one, and GoShorty will confirm which. If you are buying cover for yourself, it is almost always a consumer policy, and the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 requires you to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation. If you are buying it wholly or mainly for a trade or business, such as courier work, it may be a business policy, and the Insurance Act 2015 requires a fair presentation of the risk, which is a more demanding duty and can require you to volunteer material facts you have not been asked about.

Things drivers commonly get wrong

Leaving out a conviction, a fixed penalty or points on a licence. Giving an address other than the one where you actually live. Choosing social use when the journey is for work, or for paid deliveries. Not mentioning a modification to the vehicle. Getting the licence type or the date it was issued wrong. None of these is fatal if you declare it, and all of them can be if you do not.

Our part in it

The only thing you give us is a registration, and we pass it on without altering it. Every other answer you give goes straight to GoShorty on its own site. We do not verify any of it, and we are not able to. If what you provide is wrong, the quote will be wrong, and that consequence sits with you and the broker rather than with us.

8. Asking for a quote

The route it takes

The quote form takes your registration to our own hand-off page, which passes you to GoShorty’s quote journey at buy.v4.goshorty.co.uk with the registration filled in. From that point you are on its site, under its Terms of Business and its privacy notice. Our privacy policy sets out what happens to your data before then.

Being contacted

GoShorty may contact you about a quote or a policy you have started with it. That contact is part of the service you asked for, and it is separate from marketing, which we only send if you have opted in. If GoShorty markets to you beyond that, it is its own decision under its own notice, and you should ask it to stop.

No guarantee of cover

We cannot promise that you will be offered a policy. Some drivers, some vehicles and some driving histories fall outside what GoShorty and its insurers will accept, and that decision is theirs, not ours. Being declined there does not mean cover is unavailable elsewhere.

What a quote is worth

Any quote is subject to the insurer’s own underwriting, its terms and its acceptance. It can be withdrawn or changed, including after you have seen it, and it may expire. The price you are finally offered may differ from the price you were shown if any answer changes. We make no claim that a price you are quoted is the lowest available anywhere. Any figures on this site attributed to GoShorty are its own published figures, with the period they cover shown beside them.

Check the certificate before you drive

A vehicle used on a public road must be insured, and the driver must be covered to drive it. A temporary policy is a separate policy in its own right, not an extension of anyone else’s. Always check the certificate and the policy wording before you drive.

Using the site costs you nothing. We may be paid a fee by GoShorty when someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.

We make a point of it because a commercial interest that is not disclosed is a reason to distrust everything else on a site. Ours is disclosed here, on the about page, in the small print of every page, and beneath the quote form.

10. The guidance on this site, and links to other sites

We take care, but rules move

Every guide is researched from primary sources and cites them, and each one shows when it was last reviewed. Even so, motoring law, licensing rules and insurers’ criteria change, sometimes at short notice. We cannot promise that every page is current at the moment you read it, and nothing on the site is a substitute for the policy documents or for professional advice.

What to do where it matters

Check the date on the page, follow the link to the source, and check the policy wording before you drive. Where a prosecution, a seized vehicle or a disputed claim is at stake, take professional advice. A guide is a good place to understand a rule and a poor place to bet a court case.

Links to other sites

We link to legislation, to GOV.UK, to the DVLA, to regulators, to industry bodies and to GoShorty so that you can check what we say and read the terms that apply to you. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, and a link is not an endorsement of anything else on them. Their own terms and privacy notices apply there.

11. Using the site properly

What you must not do

  • Enter a registration you have no authority to use, or details that are false.
  • Use the quote form to test or probe it, or to look up vehicles rather than to get cover.
  • Scrape, harvest, copy or republish the content at scale, or reuse it to train a machine learning model. We reserve our rights in respect of text and data mining.
  • Interfere with the site or its security, introduce anything malicious, or try to gain access to any part of it you have not been given.
  • Use any part of it to suggest that we endorse a product, a firm or a piece of advice, or to imply a relationship with us that does not exist.
  • Use the site in any way that breaks the law or infringes anyone’s rights.

What we may do about it

We may block access and, where the conduct warrants it, report it to the police or to a regulator. We may also take steps to recover any loss it causes us.

12. Intellectual property

What you may do

Read it. Print or save a copy for your own use. Quote a short extract, in quotation marks, with a link back to the page you took it from. That is a permission we give willingly.

What needs our permission

Republishing a page or a substantial part of one, reproducing our tables or research, using our name or logo, framing the site, or any commercial use. Ask us: the answer is often yes.

Material that is not ours

Legislation and public sector information quoted in the guides remains subject to the terms it is published under, which for GOV.UK and legislation.gov.uk is usually the Open Government Licence. GoShorty’s name, logo, published prices and rating belong to it or to the platform that publishes them, and are attributed to it wherever they appear.

13. Availability and changes to the site

The site is provided as it is. We do not guarantee that it will be available, uninterrupted or error free, and we may suspend it for maintenance, for security, or for reasons outside our control such as a failure at a hosting or network provider. The same goes for the hand-off to GoShorty, which depends on its site being available too. We may add, change, withdraw or remove any part of the site, including any page or any guide, without notice.

14. Our liability to you

What we never exclude

  • Death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
  • Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation by us.
  • Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if you deal with us as a consumer, including the right to a service carried out with reasonable care and skill, and any other right the law gives you as a consumer that cannot be excluded.
  • Anything else that the law does not allow us to exclude or limit.

What we are not responsible for

A decision you take about a policy. The acts, omissions, solvency, pricing, service or claims handling of GoShorty or any insurer, each of which is regulated and answerable for its own part. The consequences of information you gave being inaccurate or incomplete. Driving without valid cover, including driving before a policy starts or after it ends. The content of any website we link to. Anything on this site being out of date where you did not check the source it cites.

Losses we exclude

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of business, loss of revenue, loss of anticipated savings, loss of goodwill, loss or corruption of data, or any loss that is indirect or consequential, however it arises.

Business users

If you use this site for the purposes of a business, you accept that we have no liability to you for any business loss of the kind described above, and the protections above that apply only to consumers do not apply to you.

Why it is drawn this way

We make an introduction and we are paid for an introduction. We do not price the risk, hold the premium or decide the claim, so we are not in a position to stand behind an insurance contract we are not a party to. The broker and the insurer stand behind it, and they are regulated for exactly that purpose. Nothing here limits what either of them owes you.

15. Your data

We pass your registration to GoShorty so that it can start your quote, and it collects everything else on its own site. We do not sell your details. We only market to you if you have opted in, and you can stop it at any time. The privacy policy names every recipient, gives the lawful basis for each use, and sets out your rights and how to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office. The cookie policy lists what the site stores on your device and how to change your choices.

16. Complaints

A complaint about this website or our introduction goes to complaints@tempinsuranceuk.com. Our complaints policy sets out the timescales we work to, what we do at each stage, and how to escalate. A complaint about a quote, a price, the cover, a cancellation, a refund or a claim goes to GoShorty, which sold you the policy and has its own procedure it is required to follow, with the Financial Ombudsman Service beyond it. The complaints policy explains which complaints come to us and which do not, and we forward the ones that do not.

17. Changes to these terms

The date at the top of this page and the version at the foot of it tell you when these terms last changed. We keep previous versions, so if you need to know what they said on a particular date, ask us. A change is not retrospective: it does not alter the terms that applied when you used the site before, and it does not affect any policy you have bought, which is governed by its own documents.

18. The legal odds and ends

  • If part of this is unenforceable. The rest continues in force, and that provision is treated as removed to the minimum extent necessary.
  • Not enforcing something is not giving it up. If we delay in enforcing a term, or do not enforce it on one occasion, that is not a waiver and does not prevent us from enforcing it later.
  • Transferring this agreement. We may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms to another business, and we will let you know if we do. It will not reduce your rights. You may not transfer yours without our written agreement.
  • Third parties. These terms are between you and us. Nobody else, including GoShorty, may enforce them under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999.
  • Events outside our control. We are not liable for a failure to perform caused by something outside our reasonable control, including a failure of hosting, telecommunications or power, a cyber attack, industrial action, or an act of a public authority.

19. Law, courts and contact

Governing law

These terms, and any dispute arising out of them or out of your use of the site, are governed by the law of England and Wales.

Which courts

The courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident in Scotland or Northern Ireland, nothing here prevents you from bringing proceedings in the courts of that nation instead, and nothing here removes any protection the law of your home nation gives you. This jurisdiction clause is deliberately not an exclusive one for that reason.
