01

What Is Temporary Courier Insurance?

Temporary courier insurance is a comprehensive hire and reward policy for delivering food or parcels by car or van for a fixed period, from one hour to 28 days, instead of a year.

Delivery driving for money is a different risk from driving for yourself, and insurers price and word it differently. This policy is written for it. It covers the driver and the vehicle while they carry out deliveries, for a single shift, a busy week or a full month, and then it ends, with nothing to cancel.

It is for people who deliver for a defined time: a trial week with a platform, a seasonal peak, a few weeks covering for someone, or the gap before an annual courier policy starts. It is the hire and reward version of temporary car insurance, and the one thing that ordinary short-term cover will never allow is exactly what this one is for: being paid to carry goods.

02

How Do You Get Temporary Courier Insurance?

Enter the registration, say who is driving and when, choose the length, then check that the use shown is hire and reward before you pay.

  1. 1

    Enter the registration

The number plate pulls up the make, model and value, which is most of what the quote is priced on. A car or a van worth up to £30,000 qualifies; a van must be 3.5 tonnes or under.

  2. 2

Say who is driving and when

Your licence details, your address and the start time. Cover can start within minutes of paying, so a shift that begins this evening can be covered this afternoon.

  3. 3

    Choose the length

From one hour to 28 days, chosen when you get the quote. A policy cannot be extended once it has started.

  4. 4

    Check the use, then buy

Read the certificate preview: the use must say hire and reward. Read the excess and the optional extras. The certificate lands in your inbox the moment you pay, and that certificate, not the quote, is what a platform or a police officer will ask to see.

03

Why Does Ordinary Temporary Cover Not Allow Deliveries?

Because delivery is hire and reward, and every ordinary car or van policy, annual or temporary, excludes carrying goods or passengers for payment.

Section 143 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 requires a policy that covers the use the vehicle is being put to, not just a policy. A standard temporary policy includes business class 1 use, which means driving to meetings, site visits and client visits, and stops short of carrying goods or passengers for payment. Getting paid to move food or parcels is precisely the use left out, so a delivery on that policy is driving uninsured for the delivery.

The consequence is the same as having no insurance at all. GOV.UK sets out the penalties: a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points, or an unlimited fine and possible disqualification at court, and the police can seize the vehicle. A claim made on the wrong policy can be refused, which leaves the other driver’s damage with you personally.

If you have already been delivering on an ordinary policy, stop until the right cover is in hand. Buying courier cover now does not repair the past, and a policy only covers the period it was issued for. If you use your own car for work journeys that do not involve deliveries, business car insurance explains what class 1 use does include.

04

What Does Hire and Reward Mean?

Hire and reward is the class of motor insurance for being paid to carry other people’s goods, parcels or food, and it is the use every delivery platform requires on the certificate.

The phrase is old but the meaning is exact. If someone pays you to move something, the vehicle is being used for hire and reward, whether it is a restaurant order, a parcel round or a grocery drop. Platforms are built on it: Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat for food, and Evri, Amazon Flex, Yodel and DPD for parcels, all expect the driver to hold it, and most ask to see a certificate showing hire and reward use before they release jobs. A certificate that says social, domestic and pleasure, or business class 1, will be rejected at that step.

The policy here covers food delivery, parcel delivery and multi-drop work. What it does not cover is passengers: carrying people for payment is a separate class with its own badge and plating rules, set out on the temporary taxi insurance page.

Car or Van: Which Product Do You Need?

Two products sit behind this page, one for cars and one for vans, with different age bands, licence rules and limits, so read the column that fits the vehicle.

Both need a permanent UK address, and the van product also asks that you have never had a policy cancelled, voided or refused, and that the van has a valid MOT and is not SORN. If you are a 23 year old with a car, the car product’s floor of 26 rules you out, but the same driver in a borrowed van is inside the van band. The registration decides which product the quote runs, so there is nothing to choose; the limits are what to check.

06

When Is Temporary Courier Cover the Right Choice?

It suits delivery work with a defined end date, where an annual courier policy would be paying for months you will not use.

A trial week with a platform

Signing up to a food or parcel app and not sure it suits you. A week of cover answers the question for the price of a week, and if the work sticks, the next step is a 28 day policy or an annual one.

A seasonal peak

The weeks before Christmas, a summer of festival food runs, a Black Friday parcel surge. Cover the peak and stop, instead of carrying an annual premium into the quiet months.

Covering for someone, or a borrowed van

Taking over a friend’s round for a fortnight, or using a relative’s van for a parcel contract that has not settled into a regular arrangement. The policy is in your name on that vehicle, and the owner’s annual policy is untouched.

When it is not the right product

Full-time delivery most days of the year, where an annual hire and reward policy costs less per day, or any work that involves passengers. Moving your own belongings in a van is not hire and reward at all; temporary van insurance covers that, and it is priced lower.

07

What Does Temporary Courier Insurance Cover, and What Does It Not?

It covers you and the vehicle while delivering, comprehensively, but it does not cover goods in transit, meaning the parcels and the food themselves.

What is covered

Third party liability for injury and damage to others, which every UK motor policy must carry, plus accidental damage, vandalism, fire and theft cover for the vehicle, subject to the excess on the schedule. The use on the certificate is hire and reward, so the deliveries themselves are inside the policy, not an exclusion of it.

What is not covered

The parcels and the food. If a parcel is stolen from the van, or a customer’s order is ruined in an accident, the motor policy pays for the vehicle and the third party, not the contents. That is goods in transit cover, a separate policy, and worth arranging before you start if the parcels are valuable. Passengers for payment are also outside this product.

Optional extras

Excess protection and legal cover can be added and are priced in the quote. The detail of what is and is not covered is set by the broker and the insurer that takes the risk, and it is in the policy wording and the insurance product information document rather than here, so read both before you pay.

08

How Much Does Temporary Courier Insurance Cost?

The published van starting prices here were £34.77 for three hours, £43.77 for one day and £138.94 for one week, based on the lowest sold between March and May 2026, and no car courier price is published.

The same table listed £51.46 for two hours, £202.08 for two weeks and £368.46 for three. The figures are the lowest sold in that period, not typical prices. A car courier quote is the only way to find a car price.

There is no single cheapest courier insurer, because the price moves with all four, and a policy that does not say hire and reward is not a cheaper version of this one; it is no cover at all for the work.

What sets your price

  • 1 The vehicle Value, type and size, and whether it is a van.
  • 2 The driver Age, how long the licence has been held, claims, points and any bans.
  • 3 The length The number of hours or days sets the price.
  • 4 The use Hire and reward is priced above social or business class 1 use.

Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from March to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

09

Who Can Get Temporary Courier Insurance?

Car couriers aged 26 to 65 with a full UK licence held for six months, and van couriers aged 21 to 70 with a UK or EU licence, a permanent UK address and no bans in the last 60 months.

Cars

Aged 26 to 65, full UK licence held for at least six months, no driving bans in the last 60 months, car worth up to £30,000. The standard criteria for temporary car cover apply to the rest: a permanent UK address, and points and convictions declared on the form within each insurer’s limits.

Vans

Aged 21 to 70, UK or EU licence, no driving bans in the last 60 months, and never a policy cancelled, voided or refused. The van must be up to 3.5 tonnes and £30,000, with no more than five seats, a valid MOT, not SORN, not a rental or hire vehicle, and unmodified apart from LPG and disability adaptations.

Who cannot

A car driver under 26, a van driver with a ban in the last five years, anyone without a permanent UK address, and anyone carrying passengers for payment. You can check whether a vehicle is insured on askMID once the policy is bought, and the database is updated four times a day.

10

What Happens If You Deliver Without Hire and Reward Cover?

Driving uninsured for the use: a fixed penalty of £300 and six points, or an unlimited fine and disqualification at court, the vehicle can be seized, a claim can be refused, and the platform can remove you.

GOV.UK sets out the penalties for driving without insurance, and a policy that excludes the use you were carrying out leaves you in that position however valid the certificate looks. If there is a collision mid-delivery, the insurer can decline the claim for the excluded use, and the other driver’s losses are then pursued against you.

The platform is the second risk. Food and parcel apps verify insurance, some on every shift, and a driver found working without hire and reward cover is usually deactivated, which ends the income the cover was meant to protect. Keep the certificate on your phone, check that it says hire and reward, and do not accept a job until it does.

Questions

Temporary Courier Insurance: FAQs

Is it illegal to deliver food without business insurance?

Yes, in effect. Section 143 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 requires insurance that covers the use the vehicle is being put to. A social, domestic and pleasure policy, or an ordinary temporary policy with business class 1, excludes carrying goods for payment, so delivering food on it is driving without insurance for that use: a fixed penalty of £300 and six points, or an unlimited fine at court, and the vehicle can be seized.

Can I do food delivery on ordinary temporary car insurance?

No. Ordinary temporary car cover includes business class 1 use, such as driving to meetings, but it excludes hire and reward, deliveries and carrying passengers for payment. Delivering food or parcels for payment needs courier cover, which is the separate product on this page.

What does hire and reward mean?

It is the class of motor insurance for being paid to carry other people’s goods, parcels or food, or passengers. Every delivery platform works on it: Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat for food, Evri, Amazon Flex, Yodel and DPD for parcels. Most ask to see a certificate showing hire and reward use before they let you take jobs.

How much does temporary courier insurance cost?

The published van starting prices, based on the lowest sold between March and May 2026, are £34.77 for three hours, £43.77 for one day, £138.94 for one week and £202.08 for two weeks. No car courier price is published, so the quote is the only way to find yours. Both are floors, not typical prices.

How much is Evri or Amazon Flex courier insurance?

The same as any other parcel delivery, because the policy is priced on the vehicle, the driver and the length, not on the platform. Evri, Amazon Flex, Yodel and DPD work are all parcel delivery under hire and reward, and the van starting prices above apply.

Who is the cheapest courier insurer in the UK?

There is no single cheapest courier insurer, because the price moves with the vehicle, the driver and the hours. What matters is buying the right class of cover for the hours you will actually work.

Can I get pay as you go courier insurance?

This is the nearest thing to it without an app subscription: buy one hour to 28 days, for the shift or the week you have booked, and nothing between shifts. By-the-minute products exist from app-based insurers; they suit a driver working most days, and this product suits one who works a defined stretch.

How old do I have to be?

For a car, drivers must be aged 26 to 65 and have held a full UK licence for at least six months. For a van, drivers must be aged 21 to 70 with a UK or EU licence, a permanent UK address, no driving bans in the last 60 months, and no policy ever cancelled, voided or refused.

Are the parcels and food covered?

No. Goods in transit, meaning the parcels and the food themselves, are not covered by any motor policy, this one included. If a parcel is stolen from the van or an order is ruined in an accident, the motor policy pays for the vehicle and the third party, not the contents. A separate goods in transit policy covers those.

What size of vehicle can I use?

A car or a van worth up to £30,000. A van can be up to 3.5 tonnes with a maximum of five seats, with a valid MOT, not SORN, not a rental or hire vehicle, and with no modifications beyond LPG and disability adaptations. Larger or dearer vehicles fall outside the limits and the quote will say so.

Will the police see that I have courier cover?

Yes. The policy is reported to the Motor Insurance Database, which is what a roadside number plate check reads, and the database is updated four times a day. Keep the emailed certificate on your phone as well, as proof of cover if the database has not yet updated.

Does it cost anything to get a quote?

No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
