01

What Is Weekly Learner Driver Insurance?

Weekly learner driver insurance is a comprehensive policy for a provisional licence holder practising in a car that normally already has its own annual insurance, running for seven days from the start time you choose, and for up to four weeks on one policy.

It is the weekly length of temporary learner driver insurance, and it follows the same rules as the rest of that range. A parent, relative or friend has a car with an annual policy, and you want to practise in it. Rather than being added to their policy, which can raise their premium and puts their no claims discount in the way of your mistakes, you buy a separate policy for the week or weeks you need. It has its own certificate and policy number, and the owner’s insurance carries on as if you were never there.

It is also the learner form of temporary car insurance, written for a provisional licence rather than a full one. A week is the length that matches how practice really happens before a test: a block of days close together, with a supervisor beside you for each of them. This page sets out what a week or a fortnight covers, what it costs, and what the rules ask of you and your supervisor.

Because the learner policy sits beside the annual one and never replaces it, a claim on it does not reach the owner’s record. That is the reason owners agree to lend the car, and learners feel able to ask.

02

How Do You Get Weekly Learner Driver Insurance?

Enter the registration of the car you will practise in, add your provisional licence and your supervisor’s details, choose weekly and the start time, then read the declaration and the policy wording before you pay.

  1. 1

    Enter the registration

Use the registration of the car you will practise in. It normally already has an annual policy in force, and whether the insurer requires one is in its criteria; it must be a car: vans, motorhomes, minibuses and taxis are outside this product. The registration pulls up the make, model and value, which is most of what the quote is priced on.

  2. 2

Add your details and your supervisor’s

Your provisional licence and address, and the licence details of the person who will sit beside you. The declaration asks for a learner with no penalty points, no claims and no pending prosecutions, so have that confirmed before you start. Only one learner can be on a policy.

  3. 3

Choose the length and the start time

Pick one to four weeks. The week runs for seven days from the start time you choose, so set it for the hour of your first drive rather than the hour you pay. Cover can start within minutes of paying, but there is no reason to start the clock early.

  4. 4

    Read the declaration, then buy

The quote ends with a declaration you confirm: the car, the supervisor, your record. Read it slowly, because the policy only responds when it was true. The certificate lands in your inbox the moment you pay, and that certificate, not the quote, is the proof of cover. Do not start the car until you have it.

03

One Week, Two Weeks or Four?

A policy can be bought for one to four weeks, and the published prices for one and two weeks are below.

From £63.18 for one week and £64.65 for two weeks, with a single day published at £24.52. These are the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026, so they are floors rather than typical prices.

A policy cannot be extended, only bought again, and a second policy is a new quote with no promise of the same price.

04

When Is Weekly Learner Cover the Right Choice?

It suits any stretch of daily practice that is too long for a single day and too short to justify six months of cover: the run-up to a test, a school holiday, a visit home, a week of consolidation, or a first look at private practice.

The run-up to a test

The week or two before a practical test is when most learners practise hardest: the test routes, the manoeuvres, the roundabouts they have been avoiding. A fortnight policy covers every one of those drives on one certificate with one end time. It also means no evening is lost to a lapsed policy at the moment when practice matters most.

A school holiday or half term

Half term, Easter or the summer holiday is the natural time for a block of daily practice, with a parent or relative free to supervise. A week buys the whole of half term. A fortnight buys the Easter break. The owner’s insurance and no claims discount are untouched throughout, which makes the arrangement easier to agree to at home.

A visit home from university

A learner who lives away during term and comes home for a week or two has the car, the supervisor and the time all in one place. A weekly policy matches that visit exactly, and it ends by itself when the visit does, with nothing to cancel and nothing left running.

After a run of lessons, or to try private practice

A week of practice after a run of lessons helps what the instructor taught settle in. It is also a low-commitment way to find out whether private practice suits you in the first weeks after getting a provisional licence, before paying for months of cover you may not use as much as you expected.

05

What Does Weekly Learner Driver Insurance Cover?

It covers the learner while supervised, comprehensively: damage to other people and their property, damage to the car you are driving, fire and theft, with the owner’s no claims discount untouched.

What is covered

Third party liability for injury and damage to others, which every UK motor policy must carry, plus damage to the car itself, fire and theft, subject to the excess. The learner is covered only while supervised, with the supervisor in the passenger seat. The supervisor is covered only to complete a journey in an emergency if the learner cannot carry on, or to drive home after the learner passes the test. For any other drive the supervisor needs their own cover on that car.

The excess

Learner policies carry a higher excess than ordinary cover, because learners have more small bumps. One insurer’s declaration sets a minimum of £250 for damage, fire and theft, plus a further £500 where the claim is a single-vehicle fault incident or the other party cannot be traced. Read the figure on your own quote, because it decides whether a scraped bumper is worth claiming for.

The owner’s no claims discount

A claim goes on the learner policy, not on the owner’s annual one. The learner policy has its own certificate and policy number, and the owner’s annual policy and no claims discount are untouched. The detail is set by the broker and the insurer, and it is in the policy wording and the insurance product information document rather than here.

06

How Much Does Weekly Learner Driver Insurance Cost?

From £63.18 for one week and £64.65 for two weeks. Your own quote depends on the car, your age and the length you choose.

For comparison, one hour was published from £15.07 and one day from £24.52. The quote also shows the excess and any optional extras before you pay.

What sets your price

  • 1 The car Value, insurance group and body type all move the price.
  • 2 Your age Learners from 17 are accepted, and a younger learner usually pays more.
  • 3 The length The number of weeks sets the price.
  • 4 Extras Breakdown cover, excess protection and legal cover are optional.

Starting prices on this page are GoShorty’s published from-prices, based on quotes from December 2025 to May 2026. A starting price is the lowest sold to anyone, not a typical price, and every quote is individual. Source: GoShorty’s published prices.

Who Can Get Weekly Learner Driver Insurance?

Learners from 17 on a UK provisional licence, with no points, no claims and no pending prosecutions, practising in a car that normally already has an annual policy, with a supervisor who meets the declaration.

The learner

The quote is available to learners from 17 on a UK provisional licence; the upper age limit depends on the insurer. The insurer’s declaration at purchase is usually stricter than the quote, and the quote says so. It asks for a learner with no penalty points, no claims and no pending prosecutions, a permanent UK resident for the period stated, who has never had insurance refused, cancelled or voided and has no unspent criminal convictions. This is the one exception to the 21 minimum on every other product here.

The supervisor

GOV.UK sets out the rules for practising with family or friends: the supervisor must be over 21, qualified to drive the type of car you are learning in, and have held a full licence for three years. The declaration is usually stricter: over 25, a full UK, EU or EEA licence held for three years, resident in the UK for two years, and no drink or drug driving (DR) conviction in the last five years. The stricter rule is the one the policy depends on. You are covered only while that person is in the passenger seat.

The car

The car normally already has an annual policy in force; whether the insurer requires one is in its criteria, and the quote says. It must be within the insurer’s value limit, which is £20,000 with one insurer on the panel, have up to seven seats, be right-hand drive and hold a valid MOT. It must not be a category A or B write-off, must not be modified, and must not be a hire car. Vans, lorries, minibuses, motorhomes, horseboxes, taxis and tippers are outside the product. Enter the registration and the quote shows at once whether a particular car is accepted. L plates go on the front and back of the car whenever you drive, and D plates are used in Wales. There is no motorway practice with family or friends, because that is only lawful with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car.

08

A Week Compared With a Day and a Month

A day suits one session or a single day of practice, a week suits a run of days close together, and a monthly policy suits practice that will go on for a term or longer.

The prices are the lowest sold between December 2025 and May 2026, and the cover is the same policy at different lengths, so the difference is the clock and the price rather than what is covered. One day learner driver insurance and monthly learner driver insurance explain the other lengths.

09

What Happens If You Practise Without the Right Cover or Supervision?

Driving without insurance is a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 points, and driving without the right supervision can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and up to 6 points on your provisional licence.

GOV.UK sets out the penalties for driving without insurance: a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points, or an unlimited fine and possible disqualification at court, and the police can seize the car. For a learner, six points within two years of passing means the new licence is revoked. A week is easy to overrun, so note the end time on the certificate and set a reminder a couple of days before it.

The supervision rules carry their own penalty. GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £1,000 and get up to 6 penalty points on your provisional licence for driving without the right supervision, and a policy may not respond if the declaration about the supervisor was untrue. The police and insurers check the Motor Insurance Database through askMID, which is updated four times a day, so a new policy can take a few hours to appear. Keep the emailed certificate on your phone in case the database has not caught up when you are stopped.

Questions

Weekly Learner Driver Insurance: FAQs

Can I get learner driver insurance for a week?

Yes. Weekly is one of the four learner lengths, and a policy runs for seven days from the start time you choose, then ends by itself. You can buy one to four weeks on a single policy, and the certificate is emailed the moment you pay.

How much does a week of learner insurance cost?

From £63.18 for one week, on the broker’s published prices. That is a floor, not a typical price. Your own quote depends on the car, your age and the start date you choose.

Is two weeks much more than one?

No. Two weeks was published at £64.65 against £63.18 for one week, on the same basis.

What happens if I pass my test during the week?

You have a short grace period after passing to drive home, set by the insurer and shown on the policy, and then the policy is void. Any unused days are lost, because the policy is for learners and you are no longer one. Arrange insurance for a full licence holder before test day so the car is covered when the learner policy ends.

Can I get it on my own car for a week?

Yes. The car normally already has an annual policy in force, for example one in a parent’s name; whether the insurer requires one is in its criteria, and the quote says. The learner policy sits alongside that policy and never replaces it. A car with no insurance of its own may be outside the criteria, and must not be driven or kept on the road uninsured in any case.

Who has to sit with me?

A supervisor in the passenger seat on every drive. GOV.UK’s minimum is over 21, qualified for the car and holding a full licence for three years, and the insurer’s declaration is usually stricter: over 25, a full UK, EU or EEA licence held three years, and no drink or drug conviction in five years. Follow the stricter rule.

Can I practise on the motorway?

No. GOV.UK says it is illegal to drive on a motorway when practising with family or friends. Motorway lessons are only allowed with an approved driving instructor in a car fitted with dual controls, and learner cover does not change that.

Can I extend the policy if I need more days?

No. A learner policy cannot be extended, only bought again, and the new one is a fresh quote with no promise of the same price. Buy the new policy before the first one ends, because driving a day past the end time means driving without insurance.

What if I need longer than four weeks?

Monthly learner cover runs for up to 24 weeks on one policy, which is six months, so one policy can cover a term of practice or a long run of lessons.

Does it cost anything to get a quote?

No. Getting a quote is free and you are under no obligation to buy. We may be paid a fee by the broker if someone takes out a policy after being introduced by us. It does not change the price you are quoted.
