Where seized cars go, and what it costs to get them back
A car seized at the roadside for no insurance goes to a pound run for the police, and the bill starts the moment the truck arrives. Find what your force requires, where to go first, which insurance it will accept, and the cost by the day. Since 22 July 2026 the pound can dispose of the vehicle seven days after seizure, so the clock is short.

What it costs to get a seized vehicle back
The statutory charges every police pound in England and Wales must apply to a vehicle seized under section 165A. The insurance you need to release it is on top and is not included here.
- If it is never collected
- £96
- disposal charge, on top of the removal and storage owed
- Earliest it can be disposed of
- Day 7
- after seizure, and only after the date on the seizure notice has passed
- Time to claim it
- 7 days
- at least, from the day the seizure notice is given
Charges from the Home Office circular of 6 April 2023, for vehicles seized on or after that date. Pounds run by the police in England and Wales cannot charge more for a standard seizure; Scotland and Northern Ireland set their own, so check the force's page below. A day is any period of 24 hours or part of one, so a car seized at 11pm has used a day by midnight.
A car collected on day…
Car or van up to 3.5 tonnes, upright on the road. By day 7 the charges have reached £348 and the pound may dispose of the vehicle, so the first day is the cheapest day to collect.
What every pound asks for
The 2005 Regulations set the same conditions everywhere in England, Wales and Scotland. The force pages below add the local detail: which pound, what hours, how to pay.
- Proof you are the keeper or owner. The V5C, or a bill of sale and the seizure notice, plus photo identity and proof of address. Some pounds release only to the registered keeper in person.
- A valid driving licence. Yours, or a nominated driver's, for the category of vehicle.
- A certificate of insurance that covers that vehicle. Produced at the police station named on the notice or at the pound, depending on the force. Most annual policies exclude seized vehicles, and the force pages are blunt about short-term cover: several warn that temporary insurance for up to 30 days "may not be valid" to reclaim a seized vehicle, and those that set a minimum ask for 28 or 30 days. What they want is a certificate that states it permits the release of a vehicle impounded by a government authority, in the keeper's name. If you cannot insure or drive it yourself, the regulations let you nominate someone who can, and most forces want that person named on the policy rather than relying on a "driving other cars" extension.
- The charges. Removal and storage to the day of collection, paid at the pound. Card is usual; several forces say no cash.
- Inside the time limit. Not less than 7 days from the notice to claim; disposal possible from day 7 after seizure for vehicles seized on or after 22 July 2026, and from day 14 for those seized before. Holding the vehicle a day longer costs £26; missing the limit can cost the car.
The pounds, force by force
Everything below is as each force publishes it on its own seized-vehicle page, with a link to that page and the date it was read. Few forces name the pound or the recovery operator in public: the usual route is a named police station or a vehicle recovery office, which tells you where the vehicle is once you have shown the documents. Several force pages still quote the 14-day disposal period that applied before 22 July 2026; the law now allows disposal from day 7.

What is not here
- The price of the insurance itself. That is set by the quote, and the pound's charges are the same whatever the policy costs.
- Vehicles seized for other reasons: anti-social driving (section 59), no tax (DVLA), crime, or abandonment. Different rules and sometimes different pounds apply.
- Pound-specific extras such as out-of-hours release fees. Where a force publishes them they are on the card; where it does not, ask before you go.

The 30-day impound release policy
Impound release cover in the keeper's name, written for the insurance condition a pound sets before it releases a vehicle. Each pound decides whether to release, so check its requirements first.
